    Write this game for adults

I love 4e, and I agree with those who have said that some of the books (especially the earlier ones) are boring to read; rather dry and clinical. I disagree that they're talking down to the reader, though. I didn't feel patronized when I read the PHB, DMG and MM. I didn't find them to be great...

    D&D 4E The Dispensible 4E

I've been playing (mostly DMing) 4e for a couple of years, and I love it! All of the things I'd want changed have already been mentioned, but my list is: - Fiddly +1/-2/+3 bonuses that change round by round in combat from powers, feats. etc. - The unfun-ness of stun and dominate (I've...

Time to bring back the prose?

I think some of the later 4e books hit the balance just about right for me. Heroes of the Feywild, for instance. There's tons of flavor in every page, every power, every magic item. And yet, the clear, "clinical" rules text is still there as well. It's a fun read, but it's also unambiguous...

So what is edition bashing anyway?

This has developed into a really good thread! I agree that the moderation here seems pretty even-handed. That said, I wouldn't be surprised if there are more cases of 4e-bashing needing moderation than 3e or earlier editions just because I think newer things are going to be more frequently...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D next ... fate or doom ?

Yes, in modern usage. But note that some of the definitions you quoted are more neutral. To be clear, I personally use the word "doom" as an unequivocally bad thing. But I acknowledge that it is sometimes used more neutrally (not frequently, though, and I think not much at all these days).

    D&D 5E (2014) Of Fighters and Sammiches

Based on the title, I was expecting a twist on Orc and Pie. But this is good, too!

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D next ... fate or doom ?

I've been re-reading Lord of the Rings recently, and I had the same thought when I read this thread title. Tolkien often uses "doom" in a way that confused me for a bit, until I realized that he basically meant "fate". In modern American English, I pretty much always hear "doom" used with a...

Is there too much cost disparity between DM's and players?

Just to be clear, the Character Builder pre-2011 was downloadable but not free - you had to subscribe to DDI to get it (although you could subscribe for one month, get all the updates, then cancel and use the program offline forever). No incremental cost necessary, true, but it wasn't free.

    RPG Desktop Backgrounds?

Ted Nasmith has some great stuff on his web site in the Tolkien section. I used this one for a while:

    D&D 4E The Indispensable 4e

Lots of good stuff above. The big ones for me are: - Ease of monster creation. I've got the straightforward math (post MM3), so I can use my own creativity to quickly make something new that will be balanced and cool. - At-will spells for wizards. - Options for non-casters to have cool choices...

    RPGs and mental health issues

Hmm, I haven't seen this yet. Now, I've only been gaming for a couple of years, but of the six players in my in-person game, none of them have any mental issues that I've noticed so far. Well, one has struggled somewhat with depression, but she's coped pretty well in my (admittedly limited)...

    D&D 5E (2014) How are you feeling about 5e?

I'm a very happy 4e player, but I think it's likely that I'll end up playing D&D Next. I'm expecting that the designers are going to build a game that's a lot of fun for me and my friends, and I enjoy playing a game that's actively supported. Now, if the next edition comes out and I don't find...

    D&D 4E 4e blogs

I guess I'm pretty low-profile on the EN World community, since no one has mentioned Online Dungeon Master yet!

ZEITGEIST ZEITGEIST - OnlineDM's session recaps

My session three recap is now up. This was the session that ended adventure one, including the climactic battle with a level 20 foe that resulted in the death of a PC. This write-up also includes a custom encounter that I created for an additional sea wall battle (Beware the Cannonballs).

    Get Rid of Proficiencies

As I understand proficiency with weapons, the idea is that anyone can TRY to swing that fancy sword, but if you haven't been trained in how to do it, it's not going to help as much. So, in a pinch the wizard can pick up the fallen fighter's bastard sword and try to attack the lich with it...

Poll: Type of Campaign You Play

I'm running three campaigns right now. Two are EN World's adventure paths (War of the Burning Sky and ZEITGEIST) and the third is a chain of WotC adventures (Reavers of Harkenwold to Cairn of the Winter King to Madness at Gardmore Abbey). So, I picked adventure paths. As a player, though, it's...

    Poll: Starting Point for Campaigns

I'm running three campaigns right now. All three started at level 1. I did run a campaign for a while that started at level 5 at the request of the players, but I much prefer starting at level 1.

    Your d20...an inny or outy?

I'm mainly a GM. I run games using MapTool, either online or with a projector in-person. When I first started running games online, I coded up my monsters so that the results of their rolls would only be visible to me. I asked my players what they thought of this, and they said that they...

    I want to tell you something...but I won't.

If the players are having a hard time putting two and two together in a situation where this wasn't intended to be an actual challenge, I'll sometimes check to see which character has a high passive Insight and then give them... well, an insight! "Sir Suave, as you listen to the wounded guard...
