    D&D General Western-Inspired D&D adventures

I'm in as long as everyone dies- likely from dysentery. Not a hero way to go, sadly. I have run a Magnificent 7 style game. It was more a Magnificent 4 with a pair of ok henchmen and a sacrificial DMNPC, but it worked out ok. I needed to sell the protecting the town over just going out to...

    The Good Sandbox Thread [+]

I liked this Matt Colville video about sandboxes. I like that he uses a few low-level published adventures to present starting options for the players to choose from. Then the other plots advance if they are not taken to make the higher level options and things evolve from there.

How do you choose a class?

I managed to go all 10 years of 5e by playing only halfling rogues and a couple dwarf clerics. Not sure how 5.5e will go and if I want to change.

One of my favourite RPG healing rules

This will not fly in my DnD game with the players. Who created this game- Genghis Khan?

    D&D 5E (2014) Delight 2024 Dungeon Master's Guide touches

I thought of this song when I read the title.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 - Do magic weapons bypass resistance now?

One of the problems I've run into is using older monsters with the new rules. Some of the old monsters have not been updated and have this resistance. It is not really a problem and it plays fine.

How do you choose a class?

I try to come up with a concept that I think will be fun to play or that will fit in with what the others are playing. If I show up and make something first, I go with something I think will be cool. If I show up last I play a cleric.

D&D General Would You Buy an RPG Product Printed on a Gutenberg Press?

It would be cool. It could have block art with carved plates for some cool black and white interior art. Someone could do it in their basement in their spare time as a side-gig to keep costs down. Printing times might be as long as some kickstarters though.

    Electing a new pope-adventure

Too many NPCs make it hard for the players to keep track of who is who. I might limit the 'contenders' to maybe 5 with a few hanger-ons and followers of them to see who the PCs gravitate to. Maybe not limit the choices to one class or race. Have a non-human be a contender. In D&D terms...

D&D General If Nentir Vale were in the Forgotten Realms, where would they be?

I thought the Nentir Vale was just the small area where the Keep on the Shadowfell and towns of Fallcrest and Winterhaven was and not the whole world? Are they synonymous?

    IN REMEMBRANCE--2025

I would recommend starting a new thread on this, although I like the idea.

    D&D 5E (2024) Spicy combat

I try to provide places for each PC to add to something. Something more than just attacking. Maybe the fighter is attacking, but there is also a trap going off that the rogue can disarm to make the rest easier, or it could be locked door that leads to escape or aid somehow. The wizard might...

D&D General If Nentir Vale were in the Forgotten Realms, where would they be?

Looking at a map of Nentir Vale, it is only 100x150 miles. This looks like the area between Neverwinter and the Mere of Dead Men and inland to Triboar.

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

This would be very foreign/strange to me as a forever DM. I do not think I would ever not place the sword in a place that I design. I design places with the intent that they would be fun for the PCs to explore. Maybe I could see something along the lines of having a PC search a library and...

D&D General Do You Play Out Every Combat?

I generally play out each fight, but on occasion I have just told the players that you travel to X and encounters goblins along the way and killed them with little trouble. Depends on the time of play and if it is somehow important to the plot. Sometimes a fight where the PCs just kick butt is...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

I can also see where one style of play has the world having its own plot and story going on and the PCs are free to interact with it. The vizier has taken over the throne and burned the PCs' village down and beat their dog in front of them and kidnapped their sister, and... But, the players...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

If you prep something and the PCs do not go there, and then several levels later they choose to go there, should it be the same dungeon? Or, should it now be swapped out with bigger monsters to be challenging to the higher level PCs? There is a couple ideas I would have if this happens. I...

D&D General Sandbox and/or/vs Linear campaigns

I guess like everyone, I have shades of both in my campaigns. I start them in a defined place such as Phandalin and that place has defined people and places. The PCs are forced to be there. I guess they players could decide to turn and leave which might be more a sandbox style, but a jerk...

    Let's Talk About Short Campaigns

I do not mind a short campaign lasting a summer or something like Lost Mines of Phandelvar going levels 1-5. There is always an option to expand something longer. A planned campaign to last levels 1-15ish and run for 2 years might have problems with time or people moving away or whatever...
