Binary Success vs Multiple Levels of Success

It seems only skills are multiple levels of success. Combat you hit or miss and saves are for nothing or half damage mostly. The exploration and social pillars get opposed by the DM wanting to push information to the players vs the players not getting the clues or looking in the right places...

Necessity of a Social Negotiation System? – When Should It Be Relevant?

I'd be in favor of using backgrounds more. Tell me why you should get a roll to sway someone and not just some sort of diplomacy roll. Or maybe you get a bonus to the check. I'm not sure to giving advantage, but maybe based on how you judge the die roll. If the DC is based on simple (10)...

How do you use the "Trivia" ability?

Problem is that anything could be trivia and some could/would use it to push too far. Is trivia tied to intelligence? If yes, make it a check or even give out a trivia coin each night of gaming to use for something to automatically pass the check.

    Best fantasy names in literature

I do not care for some of these names myself. I find that using names hard to pronounce and/or names that cause me to stop reading to go over a problem. Some of the others mentioned above like Dickens and Shaw are fine to me.

How many years does it take for an RPG to become nostalgic, for you?

Likely a bit like a song and it depends on time and place. Some songs remind me of youth and high school and others remind me of time in the Army or getting married and such. I recall some sessions of playing games more than others. While I remember 1e and playing with the neighborhood kids...

    RPG Evolution: Skull Dice

They do look cool for a gift or something. It looks like you need to hold them and turn them around to see the skulls in most of them because of the angles of the sides and such. I know a few people who would love them, but again, I'm at the age where I need simple with good contrast to read...

D&D General What Bits of History Inspire Your Homebrew Setting?

I tend to take a lot of engineering from Roman and middle ages. The series of watermills in southern France provided enough flour to feed like a million people or something outrageous like that. They dug through mountains and building the bridge over the Danube River are amazing.

Karate Kid: Legends - Official Trailer #2

Just saw the person who played the mom in the first movie while watching the first season of The Resident doctor show. I knew the voice, but took a while to remember from where.

D&D General Read aloud text in modules: What are folks opinions about read aloud content?

I agree that it should be short enough to get the ideas across and leave some places for investigation. I recall the old Dungeon Magazines that has a whole page of introduction and those are too long.

    D&D 5E (2014) 2024 new multi-target spell up casting in 2014

Are spells like this countered by other spells that are more limited in who it can target. I thought I seen where there are less humanoids and more fey and such that are not longer able to be targeted by some spells, maybe charm person if I recall. Are these other spells now more junk or...

Building a Kid-Friendly RPG – Need Help Brainstorming Archetypes

My 7yo nephew can tell you anything about dinosaurs. Now sure they should be more a pet or all the animal/monsters can think and talk like a cartoon. You can also cross the 4 main characters with the others to get something. A fighter and cleric becomes a paladin or druid, while a thief and...

    Microsoft celebrates 50 years

Is it as lackluster as D&D's 50 celebration? Asking for a friend. I also thought they came out in the early 80s with like Commodore 64, so good for them.

D&D General Sandbox style: Rumors say a +1 sword is in a cave nearby. Go get it?

If the local Duke posted a want ad to the message board offering 100gold to go fetch his grandfathers sword from his crypt, the PCs would be all over it- but not for a +1 sword. C'mon, it is a quest and in a sandbox they can take it or leave it. If you wanted them to take it and they didn't...

Worlds of Design: Making Fun Work

Is it THA0 that sounds like ATTACK-O or like TAKE-O- with the hard or soft A sound. I always thought it was an ahh sound. I recently looked at the new Shadowdark book trying to cross between an OCR and 5e game. I liked that a lot of things were simplified, but it also felt too simple and...
