    Ran MERP, Comedy ensued

I have never had the experience of playing MERP, though I have played a couple incarnations of Rolemaster, and I have run a HARP one-shot. With ICE focusing on Rolemaster United, it might be a better fit. The specificness of RM classes fit in with Middle Earth the way you see fit. I don't know...

How to Deal With Difficult Players? 5e

I'm curious, why is this specific to D&D 5e? Problems with playstyles and GMing styles have been part of the game since all eternity.

    Low ability score examples?

Because of a lack of communication on both my part and the GM's, I randomly rolled a character for d20 Modern. His worst roll was a 5, which I put into charisma. I chose to have it represent scarring instead of being a poor leader/speaker. The character's other rolls were good enough that...

How many people do you know who haven't switched to 5e, and why haven't they?

Easy where it needs to be, streamlined where it needs to be, complex where it needs to be. That work for you?

How many people do you know who haven't switched to 5e, and why haven't they?

Tony summed up in a couple sentences what I thought it would take a long time to explain as a "Yes, and".

How many people do you know who haven't switched to 5e, and why haven't they?

I haven't because while it improves on 4th edition--which I avoided for simplifying too much--it still seems oversimplified. That, and I've found other systems that give me a generic fantasy RPG feeling in a more streamlined way than any version of D&D.

Are There Any Games Designed for Play-by-Post or Email?

I doubt an RPG has ever specifically been created for PbEM or PbP. The problem usually comes when it's time for combat. Granted, there are several platforms for a more active online tabletop, many of which are also free.

For those who don't generally like to use Campaign Settings, what's your favorite one?

I liked Planescape a lot, but it ran into the same problem though not as badly as Forgotten Realms: OVERdevelopment. I like two settings from OtherWorld Creations, Inc.: Diomin, a dark fantasy setting that leaves a lot open to the DM and gives cultural reasons for class restrictions. The other...

Classic Fairy Tales or Legends Containing D&D monsters?

While D&D used a lot of monsters from legends and fairy tales, swaths of monsters were created specifically for D&D. Though mixing up the tales with D&D critters could be interesting, who wouldn't want to read "Beauty and the Beholder"?

    Status effects/conditions

First, I don't consider the Maze spell to be a status condition. Because we are talking specifically about D&D here, I don't like that several status conditions (at least in 3x and Pathfinder) are basically variations on the same problems: afraid, immobile, hearing impaired, sick, slow reaction...

    Custom Dice

No, but I have learned that you have a hard time keeping track of context. I'm beginning to wonder if you're going for sounding like you can't pay attention on purpose.

    Custom Dice

I know you know I meant a blank space between marks, not a blank face.
  13. Zhaleskra

    Custom Dice

Yes, but the designer of the dice either didn't know that or intentionally left out blank. As far as I can tell dots represent 1's and dashes 0's. Beyond which, blank spaces on a die face would likely confuse many people.

Gaming Style Assumptions That Don't Make Sense

Really? I've rarely had a D&D combat last fewer than five rounds unless something really anticlimactic happened? Why does running away need a subsystem? Sure, until you're out of range, it's combat movement, but beyond that? It took me a while to learn that casualty can mean "injured" and not...

Gaming Style Assumptions That Don't Make Sense

Yes, I ran into that. A college group had an unwritten rule that you had to tell people when their characters would be at risk, which they didn't tell me about until after my players abandoned the adventure trilogy due to misunderstanding one word, and they all left. Sight unseen, unless it's...

Gaming Style Assumptions That Don't Make Sense

At this point we're crossing whether it's a problem with the scenario or a problem with player attitudes. If you're losing a fight, RUN. Perhaps I thought it would be a challenge, but the monster keeps getting high criticals (I'm not using D&D as the example here, obviously), lesson learned: use...

D&D 5E (2014) Druids + necromancy: Help me make it make sense!

Both druids and necromancers are recyclers, in their own ways. Each class could see graveyards as a waste of resources in different ways. Druid, you are not returning the body to nature; Necromancer, you're letting perfectly serviceable bones go to waste because of some weird idea that the...

    Custom Dice

I found some binary dice, but they use Morse Code instead of 0's and 1's.

Gaming Style Assumptions That Don't Make Sense

Great, now I have to dig up an old thread to show an example.

    The Dice-less Role-playing Game

Unfortunately, I don't have game names to give you as I do not currently recall them. This is also less about dice-less and more the so-called "GM-less" games. I say "so-called" because whoever currently has narrative control is the current GM in my mind.
