Why simpler - much simpler - is better

I am a believer in the idea that a game's rules can be too simple. That is part of why I didn't pick up D&D4E: it simplified things that to me weren't complicated to begin with. A game that is too simple is one that I will stay away from.

The Quest for the "One True System" Is It a Myth or Something More?

I once was interested in a "one system for all" approach when I saw several systems for game genres that were very much the same. Then D&D 3E came out, and I liked it until WotC tried to convince everyone that the d20 System was universal when it was painful to see some genres shoehorned into...

    What's your favorite free RPG?

For lack of ownership of any other free RPGs, I must say Tri-Stat dX. Although it is more accurate to say it is the only free RPG I own.

What Do You Want For Christmas?

In theory, yours should lead to mine. Unfortunately, I tend to see things clearly stated as opinions reacted to as if the poster was claiming it as an objective truth.

What Do You Want For Christmas?

Gamers to stop taking each other's dislikes of certain systems as personal insults.

Planning games, how do YOU do it?

Generally, I write a rough outline, stat up the NPCs and monsters I expect the PCs to fight, and then I wing it when play actually starts.

RPG setting search similar to an anime, rules discussed later

I am not as much of an anime fan as I used to be. That said, Tri-Stat dX is a 2dX roll low toolbox system, where you have to choose what to use and what to discard rules wise. It gets away from the anime focus of Big Eyes, Small Mouth (BESM), but still works for it.

Do you like D&D or do you like RPGs?

D&D got me into RPGs. I am a former D&D supremacist. Over the years, I have enjoyed D&D. It's only over the past year or so, and while avoiding 4e, that I realized that other games can do the same thing D&D can in a way I find easier. Sometimes it's not the system, it's the GM's style...

Armor Class vs. Damage Reduction - Your preference

For me, it depends both how it's implemented and how abstract damage and defense are. Part of "not hitting" is the armor itself making the blade, ball, whatever end up going somewhere it wasn't intended to. Generally, I like armor as DR if all damage is "real" and defense is abstract, like...

Planescape-style - How do you run a planar adventure?

Saving the planes for high level is to miss the point of Planescape. Planescape is not a hack and slash setting: if you set out to just kill everything, you will die . . . or worse. It is a more political style setting, even without the factions. Sometimes you actually have to work with devils...

What tabletop software do you use?

I like the ideas behind a lot of tabletop software. Some have too high a learning curve. Others seem to crash for ridiculous reasons. Finally, I often find that people who are well versed in Excel can make a much better tabletop spreadsheet than any of the available options. So I guess until...

How involved are you in D&D's "metaplot"?

I didn't care that much to begin with, and then I got angry when Dark Sun novels killed off Sorcerer Kings left and right until they had to redo the setting without most of them. 4e's assumed "points of light" theme never spoke to me, plus I felt they simplified things that weren't that...

    List of core mechanics

World Tree: Use a skill (or combination of skills) + d20 vs. a threshold , playing cards for initiative. In stressful situations, regular dice become stress dice and use the sN notation. Stress dice can explode or botch, they explode on their maximum (N) and can botch on a 1. Botch dice are d6s...

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

I do think political correctness has gone way too far. Wonder what it's going to do about the fact that I find easily offended people offensive? They didn't think of that loophole now did they?

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

I think it's a little disturbing that some people have the attitude that sticking to a grammar tradition somehow means "gentlemen only, ladies forbidden". At the same time sticking to a tradition simply because it is tradition ultimately makes the tradition pointless. When I had speech therapy...

So...what type of game do you guys want to play?

I'm going to skip all your numbered lists and answer in a paragraph, or a few. Over my years of gaming, I have come to dislike hit points as a jumble of "fatigue, life, and luck", and have come to dislike systems not having a way of specific injuries mattering. Therefore I am in favor of combat...
