D&D 4E What Rules Do You Want to See in 4E?

This idea fails. After 30+ years, and expressions in multiple media, any RPG that doesn't let the bling flow freely will fail as a commercial endeavor. It's as much about the gear as the powers.

Warrior-Mage Prestige Classes: which are viable & which are not

A PrC for spell-casters of any kind that doesn't grant full caster progression isn't worth taking. You need both spell levels and caster levels to be able to compete as you level; these two things are that important, and nothing published to date trumps the ability to toss wish/prayer spells...

    I would play a bard if. . .

Perform (Oratory) Diplomacy Sense Motive Bluff Yep, I could make myself one hell of a bard that doesn't sing a note right there.

White Wolf can take their Web Extras & Shove it!

This is nothing that can't be solved by waiting a bit and then downloading it for free in PDF format from a peer-to-peer filesharing network.

    Dealing with powergamers

I have no sympathy for you Oryan. Learn to play. Your powergamer is better at this than you are, and the only way to deal with him is to hone your skills to his level or better.

    The "Build"

Games are not stories. Who the character is doesn't mean squat; what he brings to the party--i.e. what he does--matters foremost because capable, well-geared characters are far better choices for adding to a group (and thus increasing the odds for success) than one that isn't no matter who he is.

    The "Build"

Build, as with gear, trumps role-playing because what you do is more important than who you are. We're playing an adventure game, and adventure is all about what you do with the situation you're in- who you are decidedly secondary in priority.

The Will to Power: Where do your rulers come from?

What you have, in reality as in fiction, is actually only that you can take and hold. What else you have, you have at the pleasure of those stronger than you.

    OotS 414

Azure City is in a state of war. The noble houses are obligated to provide military forces for the defense of the city in a state of war. Failure to do so is treason, punishable by immediate and summary execution. Hinjo was too merciful.

Whould you buy a system-free setting?

A systemless setting book is properly called "a setting bible", because that's the only sensible reason to publish such a thing.

[Bards] What options are there to make them more interesting

Here's one that's more basic: Perform (Oratory) Talk. Talk a lot. Give speeches and tell stories whenever you can. Worry less about fighting, shooting and casting. Worry more about coordinating, communicating and filling gaps. Follow less; lead more. The class has everything it needs to...

Cue the Choir (Final Battle music)

I agree that the soundtrack to Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children has good choices for ultimate battle music. I prefer "Divinity", both parts bracketing a third track acting as a bridge, and while I don't mind the AC version of "One-Winged Angel" I prefer the orchestral version. From the...

    Anime culture and D&D

Face faults are an entirely visual schtick that cannot be replicated in tabletop RPGs. You can stop tilting at that windmill now and leave that shibboleth alone.

Conan RPG is it d20 or not?

Conan is d20. The only reason for the lack of an official label is that they wanted to include levelling up and full PC generation rules, which the d20STL forbids. It looks like d20, it acts like d20, therefore it is d20 in fact and that's what matters to Joe Gamer.

For the record: Zhang Ziyi isn't in Curse of the Golden Flower. The female lead is Gong Li.

    Anime culture and D&D

For the record, Curse of the Golden Flower is in no way connected to Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. It's a Zhang Yimou film, so it's a tragedy (albeit a pretty and well-done one) and expresses a rather pessimistic point of view. Still worth seeing (I have), even if there isn't much action...

    Can WoW Combat Tactics Translate?

PVP in WOW plays significantly different from PVE gameplay. The first thing to go is the idea of tanking, as the aggro mechanic doesn't apply most of the time--only one Battleground has any NPCs, and World PVP only recently got a boost (with effects undetermined as yet)--so tanking isn't done...

Monte Cook's Design Thoughts On Spellcasters

I don't. D&D is a game first and formost; everything else is secondary to this fact. The Vancian paradigm works very well for the purposes of creating a robust game where opportunity costs must be made due to limited resources and shifting conditions, which is what D&D gameplay centers itself...

D&D 4E When would you actually want 4E?

RPGs are capital goods, like roads, power systems or other basic economic infrastructure, and as such have useful lifespans of a generation or two before they wear out and need to be replaced. Therefore, the earliest that a new edition of D&D would need to be put out would be 2025; WotC, in the...

4th ed -- yeah, but are you actually ready to leave behind the 3rd?

The current edition still has about 20 years of life, minimum, left in it. Probably 50. There is no need to change the machine until the physical products literally fall apart.
