Rolling for Initiative--'Pathfinder' and the 5th Coming of 'Dungeons & Dragons'

I wonder if they will keep the D&D staff intact. That's the danger with WotC. The people making decisions today may not be there tomorrow, so any future "promises" may or may not happen.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

Keep in mind that this is a thread about what we don't like about Pathfinder - not what we do like. For most Pathfinder fans, what we do like far, far outweighs what we don't like. All systems have issues. Having gripes with Pathfinder does not mean most fans want Pathfinder 2.0. Not even a...

    Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder outsold D&D by 2:1 in 2013

It depends on what WotC means by releasing a setting. If what they mean is what they did for 4E (i.e. a large-type/lots of white-space campaign book, a player's book and an adventure - and that's it), then Paizo has nothing to worry about. All that said, I really don't think Paizo cares where...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

You're both right. Jason Buhlman (Pathfinder's lead designer) went to D&D XP at the start of 2008 to get a sneak peek at the 4E rules (as everyone who attended did). After that visit, and in combination with no license, Paizo made its decision to stick with 3.5/go Pathfinder.

Pathfinder 1E So what do you think is wrong with Pathfinder? Post your problems and we will fix it.

I wonder if we'll ever see a rulebook from Paizo (like 3e's Unearthed Arcana/Optional Rules) that lets you do exactly what you're suggesting. It would be interesting to turn the game on it's head like this.

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

I do wonder what the industry would look like today if WotC hadn't introduced 3.5 or 4E, and just stuck to supporting 3.0 and the OGL for these 14 years. Would AEG, Atlas Games, Fantasy Flight, Goodman Games, and Kenzer still be making d20/D&D products?

D&D 5E (2014) From what you've seen so far, do you think D&D Next will be a success or a failure?

Yeah, I think it's too early to tell. I have a feeling it will be a solid game due to the talent that's writing it, but WotC's corporate machine is the issue. Will the books be packed with info (and a great value), or will they be full of large type and whitespace? Will the support products...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

Exactly. And I really don't get why anyone would be mad at Paizo. WotC wasn't interested in 3.5 anymore. Paizo simply filled a need. Obviously I can't speak for every Pathfinder fan, but if Paizo had somehow accepted and used the GSL, I still wouldn't be buying 4E stuff - even from Paizo...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

Mearls cut his chops with the OGL, of course, so on a personal level, it certainly was a good thing for him! (Kind of like a minor league/development league for WotC. :) )

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

I do! The problem is, the genie's out of the bottle. Third parties can essentially create D&D (or D&D derivative) products at will. So WotC can either embrace that or resist it. Having more companies promote your brand would seem to be better than having those companies promote a different...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

Do you think the OGL is hurting Paizo's bottom line? Also, 4E wasn't open. How'd that work out?

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D Next Open?

It will be interesting to see how WotC goes with this. If they do have a license of some sort, I wonder how many publishers participate. Most (if not all) of the OGL publishers left have either gone Pathfinder, old school, or created their own systems. Still, since there is no current...

Pathfinder 1E Current Pathfinder Players: Are you considering switching over to D&D 5E?

Paizo has done a wee bit more than that. :) Yet I wonder how many former-D&D-now-Pathfinder players - having been so turned off by 4E - would have simply left the hobby had Paizo not taken over the 3.x mantle.

Pros and Cons of Epic Level Play?

I love epic level play. It's fun taking on (and taking down) demon lords. :)

Pathfinder 1E Mythic Pathfinder = how to break a game

Yeah, but I want the ability to stat up a 30th level wizard. That's what's still missing from Pathfinder. In order to be truly compatible with 3.x, one should be able to stat up characters from levels 20-30 because such PCs appear in 3.x products. (And yes, I know I can use the 3.x versions...

Pathfinder 1E Mythic Pathfinder = how to break a game

I see mythic similarly to how I saw gestalt in 3.5. It's an option for when you have less than the standard party of four PCs and want to run an adventure that expects 4 PCs. However, I still would have preferred epic rules to mythic - at least taking characters to level 30.

    Very sad. :(

D&D 5E (2014) Is long-term support of the game important?

I think that with every edition switch you will gain and lose players. If your new edition causes you to lose more than you gain, you're in trouble, and every edition change has that risk. If you have a hit, better to stay with it than risk losing too many players (especially since this hobby...
