D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons is Coming! - the next storyline

Not that there's anything wrong with that! :D

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons is Coming! - the next storyline

Actually, if we can get a colossal Tiamat "mini" out of this, it will all be worth it! :)

It's D&D's 40th anniversary. Tell me your D&D history, and what it means to you!

For me, D&D (now Pathfinder) has always been my creative outlet. I started with the basic set then quickly moved to AD&D as well. I devoured the 1E Player's Handbook, DMG, and Monster Manual and have been smitten since. I still remember the sheer joy I felt when walking into Waldenbooks and...

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons is Coming! - the next storyline

I had forgotten that Tiamat was in H4 - *IN* the Realms. :) Of course, I expect we'll see more mis-steps from the hype machine. Before 4E released, one of the 4E designers/developers stated that the Cyclops was going to be in the 4E Monster Manual so fans would see it for the first time since...

I think it's a cool idea. ...Except the FR connection.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Isn't Mistwell a lawyer? Don't all lawyer arguments boil down to the same thing? :D

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

Well, there you go. Thanks for clarifying!

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

I thought the scuttlebutt was that Monte left because WotC forbid its employees to do outside projects.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

That's one thing 4E failed to do that all other editions had done, and that's to have at least 1 signature setting for the edition. Basic had Mystara, 1E had Greyhawk, Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, and Dragonlance. 2E had Planescape, Spelljammer, Dark Sun, and Birthright. 3E (well, 3.5) had...

    D&D 5E (2014) Why I Think D&DN is In Trouble

I really don't think there will be much of an edition war this time. There will certainly be some 4E fans that are disappointed, but I don't think there will be the vitriol that surrounded the last edition change. Fans of 0e-3.x have already moved on (or simply continued to play their edition...

What are your D&D plans for 2014?

Since I'm GMing Slumbering Tsar (Pathfinder), we'll be doing that well into 2015. As for D&D/WotC - if they post the rules for free online, I'll check them out. If they release materials that are compatible with 3.5/Pathfinder, I'll check those out too, but otherwise I don't expect to buy any...

    will 4.0 succeed?

Yeah, Pathfinder will be a good test (IMO) of how long an edition can last. They seem to have no intention of introducing a new edition anytime soon. Clearly they won't be doing so in 2014, which means as of Gen Con, it will be 5 years old - longer than 3.0, 3.5, or 4E. I don't think edition...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Release Date Set -- Summer 2014

I can understand wanting a lighter rules system. Play does get slow sometimes due to the rules, but it's never been too bad that it's affected things overmuch in my games, but I get that others have had it differently. My hope is that WotC will release the rules for free (similar to the SRD...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Release Date Set -- Summer 2014

The D&D PR machine has not really started yet, so I wouldn't worry too much about the lack of publicity for Next at this time. I'm sure everyone who might be a potential customer will know about D&D Next in the coming months. As for "Bridging the Rift", if you mean that folks that only play...

Repeating the Mistakes of the Past

Yep. But, to make D&D a viable endeavor for WotC/Hasbro, they really have no choice. It's going to be about the multi-platform brand rather than what may be in the best interest for the D&D PnP RPG player only. That's why, IMO, for the PnP RPG to ever really thrive again, it needs to be in...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D Next Release Date Set -- Summer 2014

WotC in-house marketing didn't do such a hot job last time a new edition came out. :) Probably wise to let others handle it.

Pathfinder 1E I get the feeling Paizo isn't worried about Wizards of the Coast.

But with Paizo, that's only half of the equation. If you are running a Pathfinder AP, the writers may use all of the books for their monsters/NPCs. As the GM, you then have to understand what it all does.

Pathfinder 1E I get the feeling Paizo isn't worried about Wizards of the Coast.

I agree they are separate issues, but I think both issues are a concern.
