What would a fighter versatile out of combat look like?

I wish they had at least left enough that I could xp you for that :( Who says that's sneaky? With the slightest drop in my opponent's guard, I can quickly strike him in a vital location. That's precision. He has to devote his full attention to me or I easily slip past his guard.

    Paladins with powers being deluded/deceived?

I don't disagree, however it does point to the hypocrisy of expecting perfection on the part of the Paladin himself. So I am back to the honest error of the Paladin versus a clear transgression, either deliberate or grossly negligent. This, to me, would make for a much more compelling...

    Healing Herbs

If this subsystem is just going to make rapid healing available again, what was the point of restricting it in the first place?

What would a fighter versatile out of combat look like?

I found many 2e and prior groups had a preponderance of fighters (and other warriors) who rolled an 18 STR (and I didn't see close to half of those roll a 01-50 percentile either). So what other non-magical characters should we have, and what mechanics should they lose and gain? Also, I've...

    Paladins with powers being deluded/deceived?

It seems the question is more about how omniscient the entity/philosophy empowering the Paladin is, and how much or little action they take. The Paladin has been deceived and is about to strike down an innocent person. Would it not be more in keeping with the tenets of LG for the Power in...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

To the initial question, who is "we"? I don't think billd91, Imaro or I are stuck on this point. It seems like some are, though. The Paladin’s play may lead to him engaging in combat, wherein a d20 is rolled, an attack bonus added, it exceeds his AC and hp damage is rolled. What mechanic was...

    Healing Herbs

Which makes sense. So how often would one expect to see a character make these if he can't succeed on a Take 10? If you can reliably hit 20, make d4 cures. If you can reliably hit 25...make 2 doses - 2d4 is better than 1d6 anyway. Ability damage? If it's a 50/50 chance of that chart, I'd...

What would a fighter versatile out of combat look like?

I think the breadth of the class can be a weakness or a strength. Perhaps we give fighters a choice of Background (not thrilled with that name) options (Clerics pick a deity which governs their domains and Wizards pick a specialization) which provide some non-combat abilities, possibly...

    Healing Herbs

So no chance for an error that is neither beneficial nor harmful? This reminds me of all those enormous critical hits and fumbles charts that were so common in years gone by. I'd keep it simple - fail by 1- 5 and you create nothing of value, but not harmful. Fail by more than 5, and it's...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

OK, I'm going to dig through this point by point. Some misunderstanding may arise from the summary nature of the discussion (ie there are mechanics behind the prose that have not been stated) and some from my lack of expertise with 4e in general. If I understand this correctly, the fighter...

Pathfinder 1E What are the best "undead" modules?

Although you mentioned a distaste for the Ravenloft setting, several of the modules have an Undead theme and could likely be transplanted out of the setting pretty easily, especially as they would need to be modified for a different edition and single character play anyway.

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

He previously had the familiar available to him. Now he does not. He has been stripped of that measure of his powers. Previously, it seemed you were asserting that you did not wish to be placed in a position requiring you to assess whether a character did, or did not, get to retain his...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

Like most good questions, I’d have to say the answer is “it depends”. First off, is the GM acting unilaterally and arbitrarily, with a “Screw the players – my fun comes from taking their fun away!”, the behaviour pattern you commonly seem to expect of GM’s (but never of players)? In this...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

My preference is that a character be honourable because the character is honourable, not because he is bribed to be honourable by having mechanics that result in his best interests being inevitably served by being honourable. That's not a choice to role play - it's a choice to select whatever...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

It seems difficult to envision two exemplary LG nations coming to war. How likely does it seem to have an exemplary LG nation? How likely to have more than one? In a lot of fantasy, truly Good kingdoms tend to stand, shoulder to shoulder, opposing the forces of Evil. In a lot of other...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

So there should never be a situation where realizing your desires might be facilitated by dishonourable action? You would like the Holy Avenger longsword. It would give you mechanical benefits. It is held by your superior, although if he were out of the picture, you would be the likely...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

With the exception of the short sword, most of those look like competitive weapons against one another, without a lot of work comparing them. (But I know I am atypical.). The cites seem to me like "this is what I had, so this is what I used", not paid mercenaries. The first comments on how...

Do alignments improve the gaming experience?

Wow. @Umbran, @Sadras, @Imaro and @Cadence said anything I could have said. And, of course, I can't xp a single one of them... The key disconnect here seems to be Good and Evil as cosmological forces. The character (or the player) is not judged against my personal standard of Good or Evil...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

I agree that, at present, the weapon with better damage and reach will be a 2 handed weapon, forcing a choice. If there were a 1 handed weapon which did more damage than a longsword (say 1d10 rather than 1d8) and had Reach, how many characters would use a longsword? I note, however, that he...

D&D 5E (2014) Non choices: must have and wants why someone that hates something must take it

How do we assess this? Can a 1st level character succeed over a 21st level character? If not, does that mean that good play is not the largest determining factor in success? If we are all 1st level, so we remove that aspect, and we roll dice for our attributes, who will be more successful...
