    Creature-Controlling Spells (and Remembering)

Howdy. When a character is brought under control of another being through spells, special abilities, etc., does the character in question remember what happened? What (if any) cases are there when the character does not remember? Secondly, if the character under control did some action and...

Can Sorcerers Scribe Scrolls from a Wizard's Spellbook?

I'm fine with that answer (particularly the other person's quote), but for what its worth a read magic spell or Spellcraft check would allow the spell(s) to be deciphered. /ds

How do you estimate XP for this encounter?

EL 16 base EL +1 tactical advantage ------- EL 17 total This nets 26,400 XP or 6,660 for a party of four 11th-level characters. /ds

Can Sorcerers Scribe Scrolls from a Wizard's Spellbook?

The subject says it all. Can a Sorcerer scribe scrolls from a Wizard's spellbook? As an addendum, can a Sorcerer create his own spellbook but not be able to memorize spells from it?

Does Web provide cover from area of effect spells?

I agree with dcollins that this is a DM's call. However, I might rule it such that all in the web and in the fireball's effect take 2d4 from the web burning regardless of cover. Now, depending on their level of cover, they would get a +0 to +7 cover bonus to their Reflex save with creatures in...

Need a statistic major's help here...

If you want to check your die for "fairness", it's best you use chi-squared distribution. Open Office 'oocalc' has the formulas built in. I don't know if Excel does. /ds

    Touch Spells and Arrows

How do you handle touch spells placed on arrows, like light for example. Can the archer shoot the affected arrow at a point? Is there a 50% chance that the arrow breaks and the spell is "lost". I write this because arrows have a 50% recovery chance. Thanks. /ds

    Magic Range and (D)

If a magical effect can be terminated by the caster (denoted by (D)), does the caster have to "be within range" to discontinue it? For example, darkness has a touch range. Would the mage need to touch the object originally affected to stop the spell? Thanks. /ds

Thanks. That's what I thought because "darkness" was not italicized in the description whereas blur was. /ds

    D&D 3.x Thoughts on 3e Revised?

Well, I just hope that their reviewers are a little more methodical like us or else you'll have the 1st printing of DMG Revised (TM) with new wonkiness and errors. In reality, they should give the books to be read by a couple of RPG-playing engineers and we would find most of the...

How a DM can counter cheesy PC tactics w/o using cheesy DM tactics.

You can't make an AoO nor sneak attack when the opponent is concealed (50+%) (or is that cover?) /ds

How a DM can counter cheesy PC tactics w/o using cheesy DM tactics.

Reputation. Presumably they don't successfully kill every thing they come across. NPCs, and not even those that smart, flee. And as such, word gets out about the PCs tactic. Groups start using it against them, have particular counters ready, etc. This doesn't help against monsters, but then...

Sure it does, unless you are in a vacuum. You have to displace air particles, clothes flap, hair moves, chests heave as one breathes, etc. /ds

Alternatively, whip out the blacklight spell on the rogue. Darkness travels with him and only he can see in it. Darkness and blindsigh all in one. It's duration is only 1/rnd per level, though. You could combine this with thunderbeam (the name may be slightly off) that allows you make melee...

    Underwater Combat Rules

I'm sure someone knows the answer to this off-hand, but are the underwater combat rules suggested by Skip Williams copyrighted? OGL? Just "out there" with no rights? Obviously you can't use the web as a general guideline, but you can find them posted here and there. Presumably it is OK to be...

    tumble and total defense

It is an important distinction though. If you have <5 ranks of tumble, you do not get a bonus to full defense. Some people may be in this situation. If you have 5+ ranks, then you get +6 AC when you do full defense. However, if you move by tumbling, the mobs may not get to make an AoO...

    tumble and total defense

We've interpreted to mean that you can tumble (because it is a "move" and you can't exceed your base movement) and full defense (standard action). It has not caused any balance issues, yet. /ds
