    DMG2 and running a business.

It makes total sense for him to do the silent partner thing. I had a PC cleric who ran a gambling house, and he hired a manager to oversee day-to-day operations. The advantage to the PC of using the leadership feat in this instance is that it practically guarantees absolute loyalty, whereas a...

    D&D 3.x Skill Challenges in 3.5

Looks like WoTC errata'd the Skill Challenge system - lowered all DC's by 5 and made it so that it's now X success before 3 failures rather than X successes before 1/2 X failures. I'll have to process the new rules and see what others have to say before modifying it for 3.5...

    (PC) FPS game recommendations

I believe they've removed the DRM thing at this point. I also recommend F.E.A.R. It was pretty cool. Max Payne as well, though its older so it might not look so great these days. The second Max Payne was OK but not as good as the first.

Green Ronin not signing GSL (Forked Thread: Doing the GSL. Who?)

This was my pattern. I went out and got what I thought were the best books on undead, the fey, sea-based adventuring, etc. and disregarded the rest (after some initial 3E-introductory-euphoria buying). I'm not so sure that the 4E GSL will mean that there will be a lack of good product. I'm...

    Spam Posts

Its a big help on the moderator side of things - we need to get reports of spam so we know to delete them, but if we get multiple reports of the same spam, some might slip past us. OTOH, the new version of the forum software allows for much faster deletion/banning of spam/spammers. And the...

DMing your way into a corner

Uncharted by the PC's and their people, but the natives will know things, and you could also have remnants of ancient civilizations (think Mayan and Incan) - there might be stone markers that no one can decipher (until the PC's figure it out), or nearby old ruins will lead to clues about older...

    D&D 3.x Skill Challenges in 3.5

That would essentially be the same as the 4E cross-class skill system; you get 1/2 level + stat boost for your untrained skills. I think I'm going the 4E skill system with my 3.5 NPC's to speed creation, and I'll probably float it past my players, but I think they like the granularity of skill...

    D&D 3.x Skill Challenges in 3.5

Very good points, Elder-Basilisk. I think designing a skill challenge so that it is fair to all who participate is going to be (for whichever system) a real art. As for the screwy math - thats one of the reason I asked the question "how often are the PC's expected to succeed?" Without knowing...

    D&D 3.x Skill Challenges in 3.5

You ended up with a number just 1 higher than what I came up with - and your reasoning is absolutely right; you have the give the non-skill focused PC's a moment to shine, too. The Bard will walk over a Diplomacy challenge using that DC - but then he really should, since that such a focus of...

    Supersized Group

I agree with Darklone - I also have 8 PC's, and 3 of them have the Leadership feat. I tend to build my encounters by doubling the number of monsters, essentially building two EL X encounters and slapping them together. They're 12th level right now, IIRC, and so I'd use two CR 12 monsters...

    Agents of a baron?

"Reeve" might also be a good title - the Reeve of an entire Shire was called a "shire-reeve" which eventually got shortened to "Sheriff" as in the Sheriff of Nottingham. For that matter you could use Sheriff if your players won't immediately start with the John Wayne accents and swaggering. I...

    Blog Modification

I'm thinking about doing the blog thing, but I was wondering if there is any plans (or current methods that I'm missing) to allow for customization of the blogs. At the moment, it looks like all of them have the default ENWorld look, and I thought it would be neat to do something to stand out...

    D&D 3.x Skill Challenges in 3.5

I think your DC's are too high - the Bard with Diplomacy is a real outlier in terms of his top end number due to all the synergy bonuses that you can get with Diplomacy. Most skills at 10th level will be in the range of +17 to +21, I'd guess, which would give almost no chance of success at the...

    Ahhhh....coffee. Whats your favorite?

Amongst coffee afficionados I've known (the most extreme of which has been on Oprah to talk about coffee, and who I have personally witnessed jumping out of a moving vehicle to get to coffee - though perhaps that was also due to coffee, come to think of it), Dunkin Donuts has a pretty good rep...

Does anyone actually like Dragonborn and Tieflings?

Not meaning to pick on you solely, rounser, but the "no edition wars" edict is still in effect - and some folks are stepping on (and over) that line.
