Not necessarily, no. But it’s quite often the result. And that result is known to be a thing. And it’s not seen by many optimizers as a deterrent, leading to the practice being even more off putting to most non-optimizers. You’ll need to explain the jargon.

I’m not familiar with that. What do you mean by flags, beliefs, and instincts here?

CharOp is spotlight hogging in the sense of utterly overshadowing the rest of the group while you have the spotlight. Yes, it absolutely can be fun to build weird PCs and see if you can break the game. What’s absolutely not cool is trying to bring those characters to the table.

If you haven’t seen it before check out Azgaar’s. There’s also Procgen. Both great resources for quick and easy maps generation.

OSR What does OSR mean to you? What do you value most in an OSR game?

To me, the OSR is about playing with or emulating the rules and the feel of RPGs from the beginning of the hobby until about 1999, give or take. It's not limited to D&D, but, like always in this tiny industry, D&D vastly overshadows everything. All of the above, honestly. Without any of those...

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

And that's one big reason why I'm loving Daggerheart. As mentioned in one of these threads, it takes the best elements from PbtA and 4E along with several other games and smashes them together quite well.

D&D General What makes a TTRPG a "D&D Variant" to you?

For me it's three broad categories. D&D as in brand name official D&D. D&D variants as in those games which emulate or copy the mechanics of D&D. D&D-likes as in those games which emulate the feeling of D&D. Being in the OSR/NSR space and navigating those conversations helped solidify this for...

It’s also worth keeping in mind that you can only have three short rests before you have to have a long rest. To the 4E correlation of hope and stress, I don’t think there is a direct 1-to-1. A vague this feels more like that, maybe. But that’s it. Stress is more limited and hope should be...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yep. The world is a playground for the rich and a living hell for the poor.

What do YOU plan on doing with Daggerheart?

Yeah, exactly. It’s clear as day, to me at least, that Daggerheart owes a lot…I mean a lot…to D&D 4E. Far more than just monster design. It really does seem like PbtA and 4E got drunk in Cabo one night and this is the happy result. When a d20 and 2d6 love each other very much you end up with 2d12.

What are you reading in 2025?

Stephen King is like that, to me at least. His best stuff was early on when he was hungry, drunk, or coked up. It's his later, more recent stuff that's seemingly turned to mush.

Critical Role Announces Age of Umbra Daggerheart Campaign, Starting May 29th

Absolutely could be. I’ve posted basically that same theory in one of the many Daggerheart threads here. As a counter to that I keep coming back to Matt also running Candela Obscura as if it were D&D 5E. At this point I think it’s just habit, as the others are saying. He will soften his D&Disms...

    Daggerheart General Thread [+]

Absolutely. Healing is less a main defining thing for a class or two and instead a flavor sprinkled broadly across several classes. The mechanics also dramatically deemphasize healing in combat with rests allowing you to heal yourself or heal others. Besides, almost no one wants to play support...

Yeah, comparatively there’s effectively nothing as yet. But not literally nothing. There’s already a few Kickstarters and all kinds of homebrew, has been since the launch of the original playtest. The game’s a month old. It’ll have more 3PP support in no time. Sure, why not? I was more...
