    Classes you play the most

About half the characters I've played have been multi-class with at least one of cleric, fighter, rogue or wizard in the mix. The only classes I've used more than once or twice for purely single-classed characters are bard and wizard. I usually DM and tend to try new things when I get to have a PC.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

I view it as giving the players room to grow and evolve their characters. If you don't give them a variety to options to choose from, they have fewer chances to explore their concept. A piece of art or a pair of earrings is probably useless to the party, but it's still good loot. It's the same...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

For example: Plot hook. Wonder who would buy this bow... I know, we should visit the elves of the High Forest. (Maybe a Gather Information result.) Evolving character concepts. Gifted or found weapons often define mythical heroes, even if they weren't known to use that weapon before. You can't...

D&D 5E (2014) The Immortal Bard: 5eing up yer Minstrels

So is it once per 24h or after each rest? Why doesn't that tiring affect the bard's other magical or non-magical abilities? This is why I don't like 4e dailies. Better just make it a spell like the bard's other magic so they use the same mechanic and resources. Make it a unique spell that has...

D&D 5E (2014) The Immortal Bard: 5eing up yer Minstrels

3.5 bard is the version that best represents the kinds of abilities I expect from a bard. The OP one is quite close, but I would streamline it. Why does the bard need a "bardic knowledge" ability when there are already mechanics for knowledge, namely skills. Just give him a bonus on all...

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

I would have to read them again to see if that's true. Maybe it's because after the IMO more inclusive 3e that kind of style seemed more restrictive, or maybe what AD&D advocated just matched my expectations and preferences better. :hmm:

D&D Race You Hate the Most

Ok, how about some examples to explain your point. What would your PHB race list look like and why would it be better than for example the union of 3e and 4e?

    L&L 3/05 - Save or Die!

The fighter doesn't ignore the knife. That's why it becomes much more lethal when he's helpless and the knife-wielder can coup de grace him.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

It's one paragraph, actually. But the previous paragraph ends with a sentence that I find represents all that is wrong with 4e absolutist writing style: If none of the characters in your 6th-level party uses a longbow, don’t put a 10th-level longbow in your dungeon as treasure. Yeah, because...

D&D Race You Hate the Most

IMO, of the races in the poll only warforged, thri-kreen and changelings are significantly less humanlike than elves and dwarves. (Also gith, but for "cultural" reasons - living on the astral plane has to mess with your perception of physics. You could have the same background with any race.)

    D&D 5E (2014) Crazy Ideas 5E Should Not Adopt

    118. The Beginner Box comes with a megaphone for resolving sonic damage.

D&D 5E (2014) Magic items in D&D Next: Remove them as PC dependant?

I think they should tie the commonness of items to who makes them. Common items can be made by many non-spellcasting alchemists and artisans. You will find someone who can make (some of) these items in even small towns and there's an economy for them in larger communities. These are items that...

    Heroes, Zeroes, and Kings

I think superheroes belong to the epic tier. I'd rather take abilities from spellcasters than give martial characters superpowers, if that's what it takes. Switching from a mundane (whether gritty or heroic) fighter to a superhero should be a genre choice, not something that gradually happens...

    Rule of Three 3/6

This is again where the mechanics go completely against what they actually say. When you are dying you are unconscious according to the rules. If the designers wanted you to be drifting in and out of consciousness the rules should say that or e.g. that you are incapacitated. If the designers...

Victories and No Defeats in D&D

I think some more mechanical support for inducing and resolving defeats would be a good idea. Prisoners and standoffs. Some support for a Mexican standoff or where one party stops the knife just before slashing a throat open. This would allow the DM to dynamically turn the encounter from a...

    The Very Very Core...

I can't see how you can make the rogue/thief work without any skills. If you assume skills as just a bonus on relevant ability checks, you could leave out attack bonus as well since it works the same way.

Old School : Tucker's Kobolds and Trained Jellies

Even page 42 isn't exactly fiction first, but starts from the gamist position of level appropriate damage or that the difficulty of an attempt determines how effective it can be. It is a lot better than anything else in there, though.

    Stat bumps from level increase

I still think level based increases are a bad idea, but if they want abilities to increase in 5e, I think having the racial maximum as a cap is a good idea. I.e. a human can never increase any ability above 18, a dwarf can get a Con of 20 but only 16 Cha, etc. That way it isn't always a given...

L&L: Putting the Vance in Vancian

Yes it can. Character creation and abilities can be almost completely modular without affecting adventure design. For the designer it doesn't matter whether your fighter uses a normal attack, the Power Attack feat or the Brute Strike power, as long as it helps kill the orc. It doesn't matter...

    What's the Problem with Save-or-Die?

Regarding this point, I would like to see SoD spells that take multiple rounds to cast. An enemy necromancer behind a small army of ghouls casting powerful death magic that the wizard says will take half a minute to complete: cool. It also works for PCs. The wizard starts casting his one...
