D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

The same way with magic elves and wood elves. Edit: and TBH, in all these examples, it's about 80% geography. The deal with wood elves is that they live in the woods. The deal with Drow is that they live in the underdark. The deal with Sea Elves is that they live in or around the Sea. And...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

Mountain Dwarves go all in on crafting items and self defense. Hill Dwarves go all in on agriculture and trade. Lightfoots are all about the new..new places..new experiences, new friends..new treasure.. whole troupes of bards and rogues traveling together, maybe crews of missionaries, seeking...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

Off the top of my head, Mountain vs Hill would be underground vs surface dwarves. Lightfoot vs. Stout would be nomadic vs settled Halflings.

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

To respond to the OP. I'll be disappointed if the Dwarves, and Halflings don't get suborigins. Not because I think they particularly need them (in the same way that other species don't really need them), but because it represents a choice to dodge the creative effort they should have taken when...

D&D 5E (2024) No Dwarf, Halfling, and Orc suborgins, lineages, and legacies

Enhh.. way too small a sample to draw any conclusions regarding "real unpopularity." At best, it's anecdotally corroborative.

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

The wizard who only casts magic missile in all their spells slots still would have to keep track of how many spells slots they've used and, when they use it, how much the dice change from upcasting. Even when if we want to nerf ourselves to the ground for simplicity's sake, the system attempts...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Sure. I'd agree with that. I was more intending to demonstrate a "good for the goose, good for the gander" relationship between caster and martial simplicity. Casters are complex in D&D because the designers of D&D have chosen to give them complex mechanics. No other reason.

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Honestly, you could just about port the Champion over whole cloth, and change some ability names. All you need is a replacement for fighting style, and to choose a basic, repeatable, or adequately scaling spell attack. It may not be good, but it would be simple, and a caster.

I guess I'd wonder what they are getting out of participating in an activity with rules they don't understand..weekly..for months. Like, this doesn't sound very fun, unless there is something outside of the rules that is important/fun to them (e.g. spending time with other people, or group...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

It is an acknowledgement, that while there are separate classes, they are all professional adventurers. We can make it so the career means something too. Like, it's kinda weird to imagine these professionals growing, and becoming powerful, influential, some may say legendary, figures in the...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

I can see how this makes sense. Not 100% sure on whether I'm good with zero advancement in other skills (especially high usage ones like stealth), but it is a reasonable compromise.

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

5e Bards' schtick, as described by the game, is magic and music. You've highlighted pretty much all the skills stuff in the class description and, A. It's barely anything B. It doesn't actually say that Bards are good at skills, just that they see using them as a reason to go adventuring...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Technically, that paragraph expresses (amongst many many other things) that Bards "have a desire to learn and practice new skills" which leads them toward a life of adventure. As many of us often learn the hard way, desire has no necessary correlation with results. Also, good luck telling...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Ok. So the full measure of their reason for acquiring more skills is that they A. Wander the land, and B. Go on adventures If only the other classes could do these things? ..wait..hold on..that can't be right.

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

I expect it's related to my comments regarding skill overlap from earlier. If you have on good scout person, and you don't split up much, having a second isn't that valuable. If you split up often, you generally want each group to have a scout person (i.e. perception proficiency or better) My...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Yep, same with insight, though to a lesser degree. If there is a god skill in D&D, perception is it. In my experience, jumping and climbing are rarely significant challenges much beyond 5th level, and become less so as time goes on. Spells, class abilities, and/or a single strong dude in the...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

That seems a fair enough approximation. And for how many of these skills is there a significant benefit to the party for having that overlap? Probably.. Stealth Perception (maybe) Insight (maybe) Survival (maybe..and only if you're just doing all the wilderness and all the tracking..and you...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Certainly, was intending to only speak generally. It does mean, though, that for 'usual D&D', there are pretty immediate diminishing returns for skill overlap on most all skills within the party, even for the skills that aren't almost completely worthless within the normal play environment...

D&D General Explain Bounded Accuracy to Me (As if I Was Five)

Is it though? There's nothing elsewhere in the class or either of the two PHB subclasses that refers to Jack of all Trades. The ability itself has no narrative justification or flavor description at all.. and at various subsequent levels, they get additional skill proficiencies and/or expertise...

So we should probably take it away from the Bard, no?
