    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

Ok. Can see how there is a concern related to the amount of mechanical potence tied to ASIs.. and the proportion of decision points that include ASIs as the most potent relevant option. Edit: though I'm not sure that complaining about the number itself really captures that concern.

Can someone explain why the specific target number for the cap on abilities scores matters? 18, 20, 22..it all seems the same to me. Just an arbitrary cutoff expectation to balance monsters against.

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Monk Discussion

"Disciplined Strikes" does seem like an easy name change if the effect expands beyond or away from the stunned condition. If we are moving beyond or away from the stunned condition, I think we could probably just start from the conditions in the back of the book and deal them out as subclass...

Pretty tough. Though, tbh the PHB monk was also pretty tough at level 20 with invisibility +damage resistance, poison immunity, 3-4 attacks/round with potential to stun on each plus all the other stuff that didn't change in the UA. Level 20 kind of wasn't the problem for monks (IMO). IME it was...

So that works out to.. A. # of monsters times B. number of text blocks with the word "attack" included? If so, I wonder if B/A would provide a reasonable proxy for average # of attacks per monster. It certainly wouldn't be exact as the number of attacks in a multiattack and legendary actions...

I'd also be curious to see how close average monster attack damage is to median monster attack damage.

I'm kind of on the fence with respect to those ribbons. On the one hand I appreciated the flavor (while resenting that flavor abilities were provided instead of mechanical abilities). On the other hand, those ribbons tied Monks to a certain level of mystical flavor, that, now that they're gone...

Primal Knowledge on the Barb seems to be roughly equivalent to Monks grappling using Dex, no?

I think the interesting bit to see will be how potent the combination is with more frequent use of the dodge action. Also kudos to them for taking a situational but flavorful and thematic ability (arrow catching always felt good in 5e) and just making it less dependent on the situation...

    Are Superhero films dying?

This sounds like a premise for the victim selection from a SAW movie. ..Open on a conference locked room flourescents faintly flickering bathing the room in harsh, antiseptic light. Five characters sit uncomfortably around a small conference table table, their ankles cable-locked to the to...

    Are Superhero films dying?

The 2021 films probably deseve an asterisk given their spot in the COVID recovery timeline. Black Widow, especially, which had all the Disney+ vs. box office release drama that ScarJo sued Disney over.

    Are Superhero films dying?

Huh? Is there some collection of unspoken factors that supports this? Because it looks like you're saying 20-40% profit for middling to low performing films isn't sustainable..and that seems a pretty strange assertion to make. Like if you extend out your $300M/movie (with marketing) × the 9...

    Are Superhero films dying?

That has not been my experience with comic book movies in the slightest. In my experience, most of the drive to see new characters has been novelty, curiosity, and quality of the cast/director, and an impression from the trailer. Edit: I realize my experience may not be representative.

    Are Superhero films dying?

I'm hopeful. I wasn't blown away by Captain Marvel (I thought it was fine) but I thought the Ms. Marvel show on Disney+ was pretty great.

    Are Superhero films dying?

I rather suspect (and please correct me if I'm wrong) it's like other collaborative creative industries, where there is a tension between quality, volume, and timely delivery. Some folks can reliably give you all three and those are highly prized. Some folks can reliably give you one or two of...

    Are Superhero films dying?

Is 1 billion dollars the cutoff for you? Because most superhero movies don't hit that. It's pretty much just the Avengers movies, Spiderman sequels, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther.

    Are Superhero films dying?

2019 was the year Captain Marvel came out. I believe the comparison was >$1B for that movie vs. whatever the Marvels makes. GotG3 was down 2% vs GotG3. BP2 was within $4M of GotG2. Like, what is out metric for "hit". I'd agree that there has been a certain amount of "wobbling" vs. peak MCU...

    Are Superhero films dying?

Without commenting on the quality of the data, 2019 looks like it was fairly consistent with the years before it, and lower than 2018. https://www.boxofficemojo.com/year/?area=XWW

    Are Superhero films dying?

I dunno. Looks like this year is on track for around $9B in gross box office (straightlining current gross through to end of year - not at all scientific). vs $11B and change in 2019. That's a $2B gap (and I have no idea how or whether BoxOfficeMojo adjusts for inflation, which is the highest...

    Are Superhero films dying?

Yeah, but they kinda didn't try with the Eternals. 2.5 hours spent keeping the team apart. Like..if you're gonna have a "getting the band back together" movie.. 1. Make us care about the band 2. Maybe..I dunno..actually get the band back together. Such a weird movie.
