How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

Update: I think we're now about 6 sessions in. 2/3rds of the group are absolutely loving it, and even offered to buy me the new Path of Glory campaign so I can run it after we finish the adventure in the boxed set. The other player who isn't loving it is still having fun with it. So thanks...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

I haven't run Witchlight, but my experience running Frostmaiden was that it was very "sandboxy." The individual chapters had little to do with one another or an overall plot. The last half of the adventure seemed "tagged on" with no hints in the rest of the adventure - nothing to do with a Rime...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Not sure if I follow the question. Bad guy is scrying in his palace and will cast mirror image before the party enters the throne room. There's a chance they'll hit the wrong target. I'll do that roll openly. If they hit the right image, he dies. If not, well it's time to recover the magic...

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

Since I posted the two video links with minimal comments, I apologize and will do better in the future. I did not post them to start a fight on here - just wanted to share some potentially newsworthy links.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

He tries to explain the rationale - that he's comparing apples to apples (Tasha's 1st week numbers vs. 2024's first week numbers.) That's basically it.

    Exactly, I'm a player and not a fan. ;)

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

My old-time gaming buddy is running this group. They normally play a Castles & Crusades game he is "writing" - I mean, he has major "story beats" planned out. Like "I'm going to have this PC die and the party will have to go to the underworld to raise her so she can become the new queen of the...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Just getting into the theoretical view of adventure design, I'd suggest that some of the most highly regarded adventures in the RPG hobby are highly scripted - perhaps "railroads" by some. Every Call of Cthulhu adventure is basically a "paint by numbers" mystery - especially "Masks of...

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

I took this advice and messaged all the players (except the surprise birthday friend) to get their buy-in. Even with the surprise friend, we've been talking about the adventure and the old campaign, so I expect he'll be ready to go.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

Would it include pre-sales? The booth at GenCon? It does seem a little low.

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Yeah. And that's sort of the indirect point of my post: have I been beating myself up over idealized ways games should be played at the expense of what I actually enjoyed in my earlier days in the hobby?

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

I was only halfway paying attention to the Roll for Combat video, but I think he said that was for the first week of sales. The 3000 sold at GenCon would've been before the first official week of sales, right? Am I misreading the situation?

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

Yeah. I'm sure there are better ones. But I'm running this specific one because it was the "one" that we never finished back in the day. It's a way to complete the stories of these characters that have been sitting in limbo since the mid-1990s.

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

I mean, it's a one-shot with pre-generated characters, so I doubt they'll be very attached. I'll keep an eye on the horror elements just in case, but I think they're used to some pretty ghastly stuff from their regular DM.

    D&D 5E (2024) 2024 Player’s Handbook is ‘Fastest Selling D&D Book Ever’

True. I'm not putting much importance in the sales numbers just yet. According to most reports, 4E sold really well at the start too.

TSR How Did I Survive AD&D? Fudging and Railroads, Apparently

I started playing with AD&D 2nd edition back in 1990. Like many, I got many rules wrong at first (and probably continued to do so for years), but by the mid-1990s I had become a player in a regular campaign and was developing great memories. I would look back to those memories of the cornerstone...

Here's Roll for Combat's take... The TL;DW ... the sales are mostly driven by DND Beyond.

D&D 5E (2024) Are we going to see DMG previews?

It could be argued that the DMG is even less important now that there are blogs, online communities, videos, live plays, etc, that all guide DMs. I'm a librarian, and we've seen the usage of how-to guides plummet over the past decade. Books are no longer the ideal way to convey that...

D&D 5E (2024) Are we going to see DMG previews?

But is it? I bet there are plenty of DMs who have never purchased or read the DMG. It's the least important book of the core. Always has been.
