How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

I got mine years ago at a used game store, all marked up with tags and highlights. Still very usable though.

Nah. I'll just call it off. Three is my absolute minimum to run an RPG. I'll just wish everyone well and retire the group.

Yep. Also too underpowered for the butt kicker. As she explained last night, her baseline power level is 4E D&D. I guess she can step it down to a more reasonable power level of PF2. Or high level 5E.

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

There's challenges about this. Mostly that we'd have a group with 1 player and another group with 2 players. And in a small town, religious community where it's very difficult to find new gamers to expand the base.

In a heartbeat. However, the butt kicker still thinks it's underpowered, like all other TSR era games.

I've considered HeroQuest with a little more room for improvisational actions, a bit more story, maybe a puzzle here and there. The idea was shot down though

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

So yeah, there's one player that is very much in sync with me. Likes story, NPC and world interaction, creating her own agency and motivation, while still likes adventure and action. Another player remembers the nostalgia of old TSR adventures of 32 pages with a site to explore, monsters to...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

I do have the occasional online game where I get to be a player. They're just not as frequent or lengthy as my home games, so the home games take precedence in my thoughts. And, I mean, I could just run what they want and stop complaining. But I can't figure out what that is. Fast paced...

Yes. I have Level Up and giving it strong consideration.

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

Yeah. I know. I'm not expecting gaming to fix my personal life, but I would like it to at least make it more bearable. Or to have something to look forward to for 4-5 hours a week. I do appreciate everybody trying to help.

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

I don't have Cypher/Numenera. My wife and I had pretty rotten experiences with it at several convention games. I would also imagine that it's not tactical enough to hold her interest. I have Vaesen. It could maybe work as a one shot. My wife is very anti Free League after Forbidden Lands and...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

Yeah. Too bad that between all my players, everyone has essentially already played all the "big adventures." So I'll need to create my own (which is hard for me to balance correctly and likely to go unappreciated anyway) or find some obscure 3PP adventure. And it's difficult to find reviews and...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

Right. But I think a skirmish style boardgame like Gloomhaven would be better for that than me busting my brain on a weekly basis to create dynamic encounters with a system not designed to do that. To be fair, it was "unsatisfying" to me. I think they were ok just coming and eating snacks...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

Yeah it's hard to tell at this stage. I'll definitely take a look at that SRD when it's all released. I have a feeling that I already have a better version of 5E for me without waiting until 2025. I own hard copies of Level Up and Flee Mortals. I have PDFs of a lot of Sly Flourish stuff I can...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

It's great when people can find love of the hobby in general. In my case, it's like I'm hanging out with folks who claim to be Star Wars fans who like only the theatrical releases of the original trilogy, hate all the Expanded Universe with the exception of the Thrawn Trilogy, despise the...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

3.5/PF1 was just too much. Too many bonuses of different types. Too many action types. Too many ongoing effects. Diagonal movement turning every round into counting squares like a game of checkers. Grappling. Feats. Multiclass and Prestige class. Monster statblocks that took up multiple pages...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

I haven't had great luck with 5e because I haven't been able to figure out how to make combats exciting or how to award treasure properly. Also, the more tactical-minded players (such as my wife - who is the biggest proponent of games like 4E and PF2) get bored with the lack of combat options...

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

I understand. I have that classic middle child syndrome of trying to appease people (while remaining a total weirdo). I think there's a solution. It could be finding a mechanic to lessen the need for bean counting inventory in Dragonbane. It might be doing some house rules to make 5e work better...

I still have my Pathfinder 1 book. Same thing, right?

How Dragonbane Pointed out the Clashing Desires of My Gaming Group

To clarify, the two "problem players" are my wife and my neighbor, so that has other considerations to not just nuke the group and risk damaging these relationships. I'd rather turn "bad gaming" into the best I can make it.
