Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

In my Basic/Expert D&D game, I use a very light version of AoO. The major difference (besides the lack of a formal list of things that do/don't provoke an AoO) is that nobody gets any free attacks. If someone enters or passes by your zone of control and you haven't yet attacked that round, you...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

Wait, I didn't bring up Agincourt as proof of superiority of the longbow, or to imply that heavy armor had become obsolete. It was only an example of good tactics on the part of the english, and bad tactics on the part of the french. On a flat, dry, open battlefield, chances are the larger...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

That's not necessarily true. If they use their brains and only fight on their own terms, they can get the upper hand. There were real historical battles that had lightly armored guys winning over heavily armored knights: Agincourt But then this doesn't really matter too much anyway, since D&D...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

I don't know about C&C, but in old-school D&D it breaks down like this: 18 STR: +3 melee to-hit & dmg 18 DEX: +3 missile to-hit, -3 AC bonus, +2 initiative bonus (note that inititative is rolled on 1d6, so +2 bonus is considerable) If they (the strong guy and dextrous guy) just stand there and...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

The problem with this scenario is that Conan is a superhuman with very high STR, DEX and CON, and he's high level to boot. Whereas D'Artagnan is only a highly-skilled (mid/high level) swordfighter, with decent DEX. So yes Conan wins, but that's becasue they're not in the same league... (well...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

Hey that's exactly one of my Basic/Expert D&D house rules! :D I have 3 damage categories, by class: 1d8 for Fighter/Dwarf/Elf, 1d6 for Cleric/Thief, and 1d4 for Magic-user. This also conveniently discards the "weapon restrictions" that some classes have. Incidentally, the default damage rules...

Abstract versus concrete in games (or, why rules-light systems suck)

That's kind of funny how all this works out, because I'm very analytical (a requirement of my work, I do everything from network security to Linux/*BSD Unix systems programming--even kernel level stuff), but when it comes time to play I choose one of the lightest incarnations of D&D: the 1981...

Why no WOTC support for Greyhawk?

Hey, nice maps man! And best of all, it's super-low on stats and completely edition agnostic. The 1983 boxed set isn't too shaby either, has more meat and adventure seeds, but still very open and uncluttered. Kinda like Forgotten Realms when it was just the grey 1e boxed set...

Vote: What are the Best 1st ed AD&D Adventures

I voted for DL1 Dragons of Despair only, but now I see you can vote for more than one module. I would have added D1-2 and D3... If there were any Basic/Expert modules, I would have picked B5 Horror on the Hill, that's my real all-time favorite module (even though it's not a very fair one...)

    Eberron vs Greyhawk

BINGO! He doesn't have veto power, because it's not his job to make business decisions. If it makes sense to release 100+ sourcebooks over the life of this campaign (like TSR did with Ed Greenwood's FR), they will do it, no matter what he thinks. You better believe it! Incidentally a...

    Eberron vs Greyhawk

Keith Baker is the marketing team leader? If he's not, then his opinion is worthless. It's not his job to make those decisions...

    Eberron vs Greyhawk

What exactly are you looking for? Greyhawk is the most generic of campaign settings ever made by TSR or Wiz/bro. You can take basically any module and plug it in with little hassle. That's the beauty.

    Eberron vs Greyhawk

Why keep buying books if you like Greyhawk. Just use Greyhawk... I don't understand why you want to give Hasbro hard-earned money as well as control over the game world you play in. That's a completely alien thought process from my pov.

How well do you have to know a game to run it?

When I started playing D&D in the early 80's, all I had was the Basic rulebook and the 1e PHB. Had to figure things out for myself and make up rules. It felt very natural though. The only important things a DM needs are imagination, enthusiasm, and empathy (he must be fair). Rules are...

3.5 Stat Blocks Kill my creativity

Lalala... no I don't know what this d20 fantasy you're talking about is. I disbelieve it. :D Dungeons & Dragons has fairly small stat blocks. They never bothered me. The '81 Basic D&D book manages to fit slightly over 100 monsters (including descriptions) in just 15 pages. That's over 6.5...

    Heavy Metal magazine

There are still good stories occasionally. "The Gypsy" series is one of my favorites. The May 2000 issue had part 3 (The Day of the Czar) and there was at least another part since then. Overall I don't mind the sex aspect, but wish more stories would focus on other things, like cool...

Return to the Tomb of Horrors....what say you?

I could definitely see playing this as the final adventure for a campaign. If your PC lives through it, you retire him and everybody starts fresh with new 1st-level PCs. If he dies, well I guess you can always play one of the henchmen for the rest of the adventure.

Fellow DM's how would you deal with this player?

Use the paper to light up your cigar. Take a long puff or two and blow some smoke at him. Then say: "You're wrong, Jimmy. That beholder's got four eyestalks left." :D

Do you Enjoy running high level games?

Heh, average damage for a Basic D&D 12th level fighter is like anywhere from 1/5th to 1/6th of that... Needless to say, there's a heck of a lot less "buffing" going on. And the numbers are easier to manage. Also, no criticals (which don't fit in well with the abstract combat anyway), creature...
