"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

False. It plays like a role playing game. True and true. Random character death is a possibility and "myth creation" is not one of the goals expressed or implied.

"HF" vs. "S&S" gaming: the underlying reason of conflict and change in D&D

You beat me to the punch on that one. Quite so. Most of the characters in Vance's Cugel stories are barbarians. They're just barbarians who use words like "supererogatory" and "insensate". In fact, if anything, the point of Vance's satire is that "civilized" men are merely fancy barbarians...

Going from Rules Cyclopedia to 1st Edition?

Well, if you want to be really Old Skool about it you will create a Frankensteinian mishmash of your favorite house rules, subsystems and editions. ;) One easy way to approach 1e via RC is to use the 1e classes, spells, weapons, monsters, etc. but use the combat system and other fundamentals...

    Games You Want to Play

I forgot one, too: Cyberpunk 2020. I've always wanted to give that one a spin.

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

Right... it's totally realistic to be a wizard or an elf who can shoot magical bolts at people, but not realistic to have a badazz dog. It's fantasy. Badazz dogs are part of it, along with elfs and wizards.

    Games you won't play

Oh, it seems like 10 years ago or so there were a bunch of games that were based on gnostic or Manichean cosmologies and they were usually set in the modern world. Maybe because of the popularity of the Sandman comics? Games like Kult. I find them to be rather weak.

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

Actually, the entire dungeon is just a big "danger room" for producing the Uberkobold.

    Surviving low-level old school D&D

In my OD&D/EPT campaign, I put in traps where the PCs ought to reasonably expect one. I don't like "random pit in the middle of the hallway" type stuff. Instead, think of the statue room from the temple at the start of Raiders of the Lost Ark. You see the faces on the wall, and the tiles, and...

    Games you won't play

I won't play 4E. I've found few games as actively unfun as that one. I won't play games of the "gnostic cosmology in the modern world" subgenre. I won't play female characters. I can't wrap my brain around the alien psychology. ;)

    battlelore vs Memoir '44

The correct answer is Commands & Colors: Ancients. That is the best game of the line. Unlike BattleLore and very unlike Mem '44, C&C: A actually makes a provision for using your units somewhat historically. For one thing, different troops are better against certain other enemy troops (elephants...

My Response to the Grognardia Essay "More Than a Feeling"

False. They have more in common with each other, both in their mechanics and their methodology, then any of them do with 3E and beyond. Your statement is simply factually incorrect and there's no reason to wrangle over it.

What are you interested picking up at Free RPG Day?

I want the Rogue Trader adventure. I've been collecting some Dark Heresy materials and want to see more 40K gaming stuff. I will also snag free dungeon tiles. I may not ever buy anything from WOTC again due to the PDF debacle, so it might be the only way to expand my small collection.

Right... either you're fallible or they're liars. Hmm. :hmm: Don't be hatin' just 'cause you can't hack it. :) Seriously, though, you should listen to some of the advice in this thread. And here's one that I cannot emphasize enough: flaming oil. It's worth its weight in gold. My Empire of the...

The Game for Non-Gamers: (Forked from: Sexism in D&D)

You make a reasonable statement. I will concede this point: due to their scarcity I not only cannot slay a dragon, I also cannot have tea with one. Is tea really good at a level of abstraction (i.e. no tea)? I would still say that slaying a dragon (or other monster) is impossible, whereas...

Ancient aliens on the history channel. Arrrrghhh!

The problem with History Channel first becomes evident when you watch a show about something you've studied. After that, you realize that you can't trust anything you've ever seen on any History Channel program, because if you didn't already know about the subject being presented, you have no...
