    Why THAC0 Rocks

Is it? I feel pretty confident with both operations.

So when D&D isn't for me, what is?

I guess it depends on how you approach it. As far as I'm concerned (as a Ref), you can have as many non-combat skills as are appropriate to your character. We're just not going to quantify them. Room for non-combat skills is not what it lacks. Rather, it eschews quantification.

What Did You Want Fourth Edition to be Like?

Having played several sessions of 4E, I have already gone from a dynamic of interest/annoyance (with what I was hearing about the game) straight to loathing. To me, the game is anti-fun. All the foes (4th-5th level game) have about 60-80 hit points, and every battle is just a mindless...

What were the design goals of 2nd edition?

"Things that did work haven‘t been changed." Wow... what a backward, paleolithic design philosophy! :hmm: ;)

    Did anyone see this? Unreal

Wow... is he related to Erol Otus? I love that guy.

Which of these old school modules are worth getting?

Hidden Shrine of Tamoachan is brilliant. If you have any enjoyment for dungeons at all, I think you'll love it. Dwellers of the Forbidden City is atmospheric, but it needs fleshing out. You might set C1 in the city, and/or you might set the city in X1. X2, Castle Amber, is great. A funhouse...

Another Cease and Desist Letter: 4E Powercards

A couple of points. As an staunch grognard, I need WOTC products like Haifa needs bacon cheeseburgers. And the one great boon of the 3E era was the OGL... the OGL was a brilliant stroke which is of benefit to gamers everywhere and helps ensure the life of this hobby in the future, come what...

    Example of Basic D&D Combat

*gong* You have done well, Bullgrithopper. Now meditate on this: A student said to a master "Does a Behir have Gygax nature?" And the master replied "No." *gong*

    Example of Basic D&D Combat

That the 'rules' are in fact only guidelines is the basis of Old School play. You cannot understand or practice Old School play without an acceptance of that rule, any more than you can do modern Physics without an understanding and acceptance of gravity. As Judge, I know best about the...

I Think I Am Going About It Wrong

If I may say so, it's hard to get more Old School than my 1975 rules Empire of the Petal Throne campaign. It is a megadungeon campaign, started from 1st level, with expendable slaves/hirelings, wandering monsters, deathtraps, monsters on level 1 that have 7 hit dice (you need to trick it or run...

    How is 2nd Edition?

Broken? I wouldn't say that. The core of 2E is basically like the core of 1E, but with some of the later optional material (aspects of Unearthed Arcana and the Survival Guides) thrown in. The only thing I think is broken in the 2E core is the ability to add your damage bonus from high Strength...

    Example of Basic D&D Combat

On thing I find interesting is how little D&D actually needs an initiative system. Running Empire of the Petal Throne (OD&D with a few twists... which I guess is a redundant statement!), I don't even use an initiative system. I do roll for surprise, if applicable. But otherwise it's generally...

Why doesn't WotC license older editions?

Have you checked out Ruins of Ramat from Brave Halfling Publishing? The print copy is $5 including shipping, and comes with the PDF version. It is digest size like the original books. And have you checked out Geoff McKinney's Supplement V: Carcosa? There are new products coming out.

Looking for the Old School: Tell my group what to play

C&C is fine, but it ain't 1E. In C&C, like in 3E, a spellcaster's spells are more difficult to save against the higher level he is. That alone changes things significantly. People sometimes say that wizards were all-powerful in old school D&D. Not if you have decent saves. They're way more...

Why doesn't WotC license older editions?

Emphasis added. I respect your disagreement, but I call outright shenanigans on your "certainly". The existence of multiple simultaneous branches of D&D (basically, two) was certainly not "certainly involved". It was, at best, arguably involved. I disagree that it was involved at all.

Looking for the Old School: Tell my group what to play

Like Philotomy, I'm into OD&D (1974). It is not entirely like 1E, though... it's a toolkit for designing your own custom fantasy game. If you want to give it a look, either buy the PDFs from WOTC (I think they're on DriveThru or whatever that's callled) or check out the latest retro-clone...

    Tips for expediting 4e Encounters?

Cowbell Minons, you need more of it. Since a non-minion is basically Hector or Ajax, don't use more than one or two per group of foes. Caveat: I've never run 4E and probably won't, but having played it... a lack of minions makes it horrible (IMO).
