    Fixing HS1 Slaying Stone

What if the Slaying Stone is not a magical item at all? What if it is an ancient technological device... like a bomb or grenade (I haven't looked at the new Gamma World but I'm thinking of something from Classic Gamma World like a "torc grenade" that doesn't even do damage... it simply...

The "Old School Revival" - The Light Bulb Goes On

I think every step away from the 3 Little Brown Books (1974) has made the game worse. That includes Greyhawk (1975). You add in Thieves, and all the sudden regular Fighting Men may not be able to move silently or climb walls anymore. You add in variable damage, now everyone starts carrying the...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

Yeah, the stuff that many folks don't want to hear. The fact is, if you're a foodie, you may get this awesome idea for "Escar-to-go!", the World's Finest Fast Food Snail Joint. That ain't gonna fly in Texas! You could put one up next to McDonald's, which sells some of the world's most...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

If gamers sat around Cafe Marxisme in berets smoking clove cigarettes and playing Artaud: the Malaise, that wouldn't mean that role playing games were suddenly more creative and interesting. "Dogma" isn't amateur... there are good dogmas and bad dogmas. The good ones are good, and the bad ones...

Are Essentials more old school or just a clever marketing ploy?

Interesting. To me it is almost exactly the opposite. OD&D (1974) is the most liberating, conceptually advanced role playing game that I've ever encountered (I came to it late; started with Moldvay); virtually every other fantasy game seems like a defective copy. You have your Fighting Man...

Tabletopocalypse Now - GMS' thoughts about the decline in the hobby

I didn't find the article very informative... it harps on one data point and attempts to draw conclusions that I don't think are warranted. Did the author have a very successful career in the role playing game industry? If not, that is probably not his fault since almost no one ever has. But...

    Keep on Shadowfell...how long?

Send the 1st level party right to Irontooth. I hear it will be a lot shorter than that.

    DM's Kit?

Yeah, it pretty much seems like if you spent $20 on the RC you don't need to spend $40 on this, since it includes less information for twice the price.

    Essentials Paladin (Sentinel) is up

Paladins are good guys again? This totally rawks. That is so much better than "generic fanatics". That just seems banal. "Hi, I'm the dedicated war champion and death-or-glory fanatic of Momasboi, god of dancing in floral meadows." ... "Oh, yeah? Well I'm the dedicated war champion and...

Comparing Potential Systems for a "Serenity"/"Firefly"-based Campaign

So, is it all "Mongoosed up" or did they actually playtest this game? I keep hearing good things about it but usually their products are very frustrating.

Comparing Potential Systems for a "Serenity"/"Firefly"-based Campaign

I know I'm a bit late to this, but my top suggestions would be: Classic Traveller Diaspora I guess you could run it with Savage Worlds... it's the system that's OK for just about anything. But Firefly always screamed "Traveller!" to me, and Diaspora is Traveller as an arty game.

    "Discipline of Death" Feat

I was thinking of the Heroic Effort thing from HotFL. That's a retroactive +4, though in retrospect that's only if you "fail" the save. So if you already have a +7, you will only have a recoverable failure on a roll of "2". For some reason I had it in my head that you could add that +4 whenever...

Attacking vehicles - awesome or silly?

I think that there has to be some common sense. Is the whole planet a vehicle that can be slowed or grabbed? Where does it end? I like the idea that for something big, you're only attacking one piece of it. Just like, if you attack a rock you're not attacking the whole planet. Likewise, maybe...

    Essentials: Druid Preview Is Up!

I suppose if you're using this class in a world that doesn't have wolves and bears (Athas, for example) you just re-fluff the critter as something similar that fills that niche?
