Elan's rapier has never shown up on him when he's not holding it, the same as Durkon's hammer or Belkar's daggers. There's no reason to think he's unarmed here just because we don't see the rapier hanging at his belt. Outmatched, probably, especially if the imp pops in to provide a flank, but...

There is no DM nor any players. Just characters in a world that follows D&D rules. Try to read it as a story and not a transcript of a D&D game; that's how the author writes it.
