    WotC/TSR back catalog poll

I voted "Yes" with certain caveats. First, I want to be able to download all the books and store them on my computer. (I use a Mac so whatever they decide to do it should be usable on Apple products.) Second, I want the to see the old modules redone to the same quality standards as what is...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

This. It seems way too coincidental that this is occurring on the day WotC's new Internet Sales Policy goes into effect. I would contact RPGNow.com directly.

What do you do without balance?

See, I disagree, I know there are people who do just that. It is not an issue of desire in as much as it is an issue of acceptance. I am willing to accept that my fighter is more powerful than a wizard today and will slowly become less powerful over time. I think part of it comes down to...

What do you do without balance?

This covers half of it. There are also many of us who like "balance over time." Meaning, it is alright for a fighter to be more powerful than a wizard at level one and a wizard to be more powerful at level twenty, etc. The flip side are people who want to see characters "balanced" between...

Stephen Schubert is the new D&D Lead developer

The designer is the one who comes up with the ideas and mechanics. The developer then takes those ideas and mechanics and refines them. He tweaks and changes to make sure it works within the context of the system.

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

I think you missed the point I am trying to make. I used your reference that a fighter is boring to suggest that so is a wizard, from a certain point of view. As to the larger point about this "problem" - I am not challenging whether a "problem" can exist with respect to fighters/rogues versus...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

That's funny, I find playing high level spell-casters starts to get kind of boring. I can spend hours trying to optimize my spell selection so that any encounter I face can easily be defeated with one spell. I can spend hours scrying locations waiting for the perfect opportunity to strike. I...

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

A couple years back, I was invited to play in a high level (18-20th) game. The game was five players with the following classes: Wizard, Wizard, Cleric, Cleric, Druid. One wizard focused on battlefield control, the other on debuffs. One cleric focused all his spells on buffing the party, the...

    The real flaw of 3E/3.5E/OGL

    This. And this.

Fighters didn't matter after 11th level?

Like a lot of the "problems" that exist in 3.5e, the fighter sucking after level 11 is really dependent on how your group happens to game. In my current campaign, which is very unoptimized, I cannot imagine a session without any of the current PCs, including the 14th level fighter. We do not...

    How Fantastic?

I happen to prefer a much more mundane game. I like the game to feel like it really is medieval Europe with a little magic, and some monsters. I find that when I keep the overall setting fairly mundane, that that enhances the fantastical nature of things like dragons, magic, etc.

Adventures v. Situations (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

Since there has been a couple posts here trying to ascertain what I meant by using the word "situation", please, allow me the chance to clarify. To me, a "situation" is nothing more than a person, place, or thing on the map. To me, an "adventure" is when the DM develops a "situation" into a...

Adventures v. Situations (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

Considered me thoroughly amused and delighted that a line I was quoted as using spawned such an interesting thread. Allow me thank Scribble, Raven Crowking, Ourph, and everyone else who has contributed to this thread. It has truly been entertaining and educational. :)

Adventures v. Situations (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

That's a pretty simplified way of looking at it. But, I would agree. It also illustrates the main strengths and weaknesses of these ideas. Dumping the mouse in a maze limits his ability to choose his own direction. He can go forward, backward, left or right. However, he has motivation - the...

    Why the World Exists

As I said in the other thread, I do not feel that the point of these discussions is to place people into two distinct camps. Rather, I find this to be an interesting debate over methodology. The fact that various methods can, and do produce similar results does not change the fact those methods...

Adventures v. Situations (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

Part of human nature is to take complex ideas and place them in neat little phrases to make them easier to understand. It is not so much an issue of right or wrong - I tried to head off in my initial post in this thread. The discussion in this thread and the one it was forked from is clarifying...

    Why the World Exists

We just finished a three-and-a-half year campaign that took the party from level one to level sixteen. From level one to about level six, the party avoided, evaded, or negotiated with about eighty percent of all encounters. From level seven to the end of the campaign the percentage of avoid...

    Why the World Exists

I don't know. I consider me making the choice versus my players making the choice to be a big difference.

    Why the World Exists

Are you referencing information about game mechanics, story descriptions, or both? I would say giving out mechanical information about what the encounter is is not necessary, giving out a description of what it is, is. If, for example, I say there is a 7th level orc barbarian wandering the...

Adventures v. Situations (Forked from: Why the World Exists)

No, you're just special. ;) Actually, I think most, if not all, of us do both to some extent. I may place something with an idea of what will happen if the PCs follow it. But, I leave myself the opportunity to change it if the PCs go in another direction, without loosing much in terms of...
