Inventing names is detrimental to my immersion

My normal approach... * Avoid apostrophes. Where used at all, it has the same phonetic meaning it would have in those real-world languages that traditionally use apostrophes, and the naming conventions will match those real-world cultures. This basically limits it to pseudo sub-Saharan...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

Yep, as empirate noted, it's already been noted. My view is that as far as the darkvision0-using character is concerned, no shadow exists for him (character-pov subjective interpretation), so the hips won't work against him (but may work against others who don't have darkvision). Others in the...

D&D 4E WotC this is something you absolutely cannot screw up in 5E like you screwed up in 4E

Latin names break immersion. 4e style names just sound silly. How about plain old English names? Brontosaurus thunder drake Tyrannosaurus king drake pterodactyl wing-finger Triceratops three-horned drake (lizard) Allosaurus lesser king drake (literally: other lizard) Much more readily...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

/wanders off to crate a character whose hide in plain sight power is activated by swivelling his hips just so, causing everyone around to look away in embarrassment.

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

My personal take on it (and this may or may not be a house rule; but it is how I rule it) is that you can attempt to use hips anytime, anyplace. Whether it works against any particular individual or not depends on whether or not that individual perceives the space you are in as having dim...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

I'd say the level of illumination is a subjective thing, not something that objectively exists. Consider a pitch black hallway with a torch at point X. For a normal human, the space up to X+20 is bright light, and up to X+20 to X+40 is shadowy. For an elf, X+0 to X+40 is bright, and X+40 to...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

A very relevant related question which completely sidesteps how darkvision works... Suppose the sahdowthingy dude is 30 feet from our heroes, who are using a torch for illumination. The human has normal vision, so at that distance the torch provides shadowy illumination. The elf hero has...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

If we posit that selfsame flat featureless plain, there can't be any shadows for the shadowthingy guy to use either.

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

Let's agree to disagree. At this point, we are both repeating the same statements.

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

Thing is, hips works on teh plain old visible light level, where a shadow exists. Darkvision works on a different spectrum, where the shadow does not exist. For those who have darkvision, you are attempting to use hips in a place where there is no shadow.

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

With my interpretation, it would mean that the hips would fail only against those individuals that have darkvision. If I have hips, my own darkvision (or lack of it) has no bearing on whether it works. When I use my hips, my human opponent can't see me, but my dwarven opponent (who has...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

Thank you for quoting the SRD at me. I see lines that say Su hips are beaten by AMF, while Ex hips aren't. I don['t see anything that indicates that either version of hips can beat darkvision.

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

The (Ex)/(Su)/(Sp) distinction is only relevant for the purpose of antii-magic and dispel magic type effects. For anything else, it is not relevant. D&D does not have any kind of "because magic" I-win button. There are plenty of I-win buttons, to be sure. But simply being magical isn't in and...

Pathfinder 1E Hide in Plain Sight = poor man's invisibility?

It doesn't count as a shadow if the opponent has darkvision, because darkvision trumps all visibility issues regarding normal visible light.

    D&D 5E (2014) Pet Peeve: Weapon Weights

In my games, I mostly use pounds (or kg, as you like). But I also apply a minimum "effective weight" of 1 lb per foot of item length (or 0.5 kg per 30 cm of item length). That reflects the awkwardness of larger items (including nearly all weapons) quite nicely.

    Wish

Let him know immediately that if he wishes for one of the "ordinary" things specifically approved by the wish, he gets to make the standard chance of success. If he tries to wish for something outside those limits, make sure he knows that it will almost certainly get twisted. If he still wants...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Healing and Broccoli

One way to allow variety in cleric focuses and still provide a playable and easily-accessiblebase class in the core book is to limit the core product to just three deities: a generic god of good, a generic god of evil, and a generic god of nature. For a surprisingly large number of story lines...

    D&D 5E (2014) On Healing and Broccoli

I see a number of issues here. * I really don't like the idea of clerics or priests being "healers first, speciality second". I'd rather see them as the non-martial champion of their deity, casting the buffing spells. Buffing doesn't have to imply healing. * In that light, the paladin class...

    D&D 5E (2014) Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

This is why I want a 5e system that can handle odd corner cases. At a metagame level, there is a strong reason why NPC classes progress hit points. It's so His August Personage in Jade, The Emperor of all China (aristocrat 20) doesn't get killed by the nearest house cat (or level 1 PC), and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Poll: What is a Level 1 PC?

Actually most of the people who played (and play) what you call "Basic D&D" refer to it as "Classic D&D". And the white box sets that AD&D grew out of are usually referred to as "Original D&D" (or sometimes, "0e"). Edit: "Basic D&D" would normally be understood to refer specifically to play at...
