Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

I think *most* people like a concept first and just go with whatever race/class/background is closest and then address it's shortcomings afterwards while doing what they can in spite of them. I mean, I know some people who play certain combinations purely because they enjoy them mechanically...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

That was definitely more the case with the 3e Warlock as compared to the 3e Fighter, which I think is part of why it ended up being really popular. Fighter chose a bonus feat at 1st level and Warlock chose a single invocation at 1st level. That was it. You could easily jump into the Warlock...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

Except for you know, the Ranger which h is getting redone. I think it's more about that feeling of familiarity/tradition that keeps Fighters on their current trajectory (or lack thereof). People honestly believe that to give the class more utility or abilities beyond more damage/ac/hit...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

Every 5e sub class in the PHB except battlemaster, champion, theif, assassin, and berserker has explicitly supernatural powers/casts spells. I mean it's certainly conceivable in theory but I don't see many D&D players buying in on a game with that many classes removed.

Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

I.e. they can't be Fighters because of the idea that a "Warrior who doesn't have any kind of supernatural/magical aid or items or distinguishing exploration/social/cultural tricks" can't be modeled with a Fighter.

No, options in and of themselves don't have meaning. However many options actually do. What matters is the actual effects those options have and the Fighter's relative lack of options means that when it comes to dealing with a situation that doesn't involve hitting it until it's dead, it's...

Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

Being able to heal and having a magic sword, invoking promises, and using magic items are about the extent of this "magic". Surely you think that being able to cast half a dozen spells every day using the same system that Morgan la Fay/Gandalf would use is a bit much in modeling that, right...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you like Subsubclasses?

I greatly prefer Cleric domains/Warlock patrons to Wizard schools because when I imagine my caster character, I tend to think of them in terms of "They wield elemental/divination/mental/healing/nature themed powers" as opposed to "They cast spells from the...

Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

Telling the person who wants to be Aragon/Gimli/Legolas that the spells they're using are not really spells doesn't help a whole lot when they use pretty much all the same mechanics as spells. Not any more than telling someone that throwing around alchemist fires, healing potions, and using the...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

I'm saying that level of super human strength and/or narrative power needs to be generally proportional to a setting's power level and how often that power level is encountered. Simply being brave but otherwise mundane only gets you so far where others are also brave, but wield powers beyond...

D&D 5E (2014) The Fighter Extra Feat Fallacy

Mostly because D&D generally ups the fantasy ante. In most fantasy tales, raising the dead, increasing one's lifespan, curing any known ailment, teleportation long distances, summoning powerful spirits, etc represent the pinnacle of magical power, are usually only wielded by supernatural...

    D&D 5E (2014) Do you like Subsubclasses?

Yes. I love them so much that I wish they had made fewer base classes with general progression (Warrior, Rogue, Mage, Priest) and expanded on the subclasses even further. Kind of a more extreme version of 2e.

Human Fighters Most Common Race/Class Combo In D&D

D&D's version of the Ranger and Paladin rely greatly on their sorcery/supernatural abilities. I don't think anyone wanting to make an Aragon, Robin Hood, and King Aurthur character is particularly keen on their supernatural power- and definitely not in the form of charms and spells ala Gandalf...
