D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

Agreed. If this was nothing more than a zero-sum situation between D&D and Pathfinder, the 5E sales would be nowhere near what we're seeing on Amazon. The PHB is number one in books, for Pete's sake. That number could not have been reached even if every single Pathfinder fan jumped ship (and...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

That still doesn't explain how the APG was able to match sales with the entire Dark Sun project plus the Psionics splat, since none of those involved Essentials. (And keep in mind that a tie in this context was a disaster for WotC, given the relative size and resources of the two companies.) My...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

In 3Q of 2010 (July-Sept), Wizards produced Vor Rukoth, The Demonomicon, Dark Sun Player's Guide and Dark Sun Campaign Setting, Marauders of the Dune Sea and the Psionic Power Splatbook. The Rules Compendium and the first Essentials book were released in the very last week of September...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

But Pathfinder had already tied Wizards in Q3 of 2010, just before Essentials was launched. See http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/19151.html Wizards regained the lead in Q4 of 2010 after Essentials was released. http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/19721.html The key thing that stands out...

D&D 5E (2014) I think we can safely say that 5E is a success, but will it lead to a new Golden Era?

It's been awhile, but if I recall the sales figures correctly, Pathfinder had already equaled or passed by WotC before Essentials was ever launched. In the quarter after Essentials was launched, WotC regaine the lead. Then, when they returned to the ADEU books, they fell behind again - though at...

D&D 5E (2014) Monster Manual soon to be in the wild!

Doesn't look like it would be very hard to turn the Kenku into a playable PC race. I wonder how many other MM creatures we'll see along those lines.

D&D 5E (2014) What's one thing that pleasantly surprised you, and one thing that disappointed you about the PHB?

Most pleasant surprise: the expanded spell list, including many iconics that didn't appear in the Starter set. Biggest disappointment: Death Domain and Oathbreaker Paladins won't appear until the DMG.

    D&D 5E (2014) Why play a pact blade warlock?

Yeah, I would wait until the book is available. There may very well be ways to juice up those melee attacks. But, for now, no one can really answer your question unless they somehow scored an early copy.

    D&D 5E (2014) Feats / Multiclassing

Feats: yes. Multiclassing: No, at least not until characters have at least 10 levels in starting class. Then I might reconsider.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5e Basic Rules poll

I see a couple of things I may tinker with, but I'm pretty sure this will be my go-to version for a long time to come.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Flumpf Is Back

That's sure to be a dealbreaker for at least 50 interweb posters.

D&D 5E (2014) Tyranny of Dragons: The New Edition?

That's my understanding, but we'll know more later on. I haven't read a lot of FR fiction, but I do like Richard Lee Byers. I put off reading the "Brotherhood of the Griffin" series for a long time and then was pleasantly surprised when I finally got around to it. I still haven't completed it...

D&D 5E (2014) Saving Throws not mandated by class

No matter what the final written rule, I'll probably just allow everyone (monsters included) to add their proficiency bonus to all saves. Cuts down a bit on customization, but it's easier to remember and acts as an additional nerf on casters, who benefit the most (offensively) from blown saves.

D&D 5E (2014) What do you want from Legends & Lore

I think he's doing fine. He's going to catch some flack from some people for anything he does, because they've already made up their minds to despise anything the design team does or doesn't do. I'm confident that time will prove that their bark is far bigger than their bite.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legends & Lore Article 4/1/14 (Fighter Maneuvers)

In principle, I don't have a problem with the subclass. My biggest concerns are whether its introduction will slow down combat resolution, the extent to which it will force grid-based play and whether it will be reasonably balanced against other fighter subtypes. The article just doesn't...
