D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

I think people are just spitballing because the weird WOTC survey and because thinking about this stuff is just what EN world does! Personally while I like 5e I have played it enough to a) see its problems clearly and b) be open to new options and ideas - even if that means a new edition.

D&D 5E (2024) YOU are in charge of the next PHB! What do you change?

In terms of some general principles I would like to see More customization options - essentially more feats and less dependence on subclasses for character development. Maker martial classes a bit more interesting. Id like to see the battlemaster significantly elaborated. I would like to see...

D&D General Did you get your start playing D&D, and what do you play now?

Started with Basic and 1e. But I play with one 5e group and another group that dislikes 5e and we play Traveler, 4e, Pendragon etc.

D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) do you tend to ignore?

It has never seemed a huge deal in play. We still dont allow two concentration spells at once etc

D&D 5E (2014) What rule(s) do you tend to ignore?

Concentration checks for damage - we never remembered in the first campaign and we have kept the tradition alive every since.

D&D General IMO, Alignment should be "Fill in the blank"

I saw the allegiances system used in 3rd edition D&D and I think it is good way of including traditional alignments with other commitments. You could have a knight whose highest commitment is law, or good or specific king or religion. It allows the somewhat abstract alignments to mesh with more...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D in the Grishaverse

I agree that Shadow & Bone is good. I think you will need to develop rules around the way that Grishas can (greatly) enhance their power via various items and substances. This seems important to the show's story but also to the world.

D&D 5E (2014) How do you feel about games without Feats and Multiclassing?

I really like customization so I very strongly prefer playing a game with feats and MC. If I were to DM id like to add a few extra feats because I really think 5e needs a bit more in the customization department. So I am a number one on this poll (though I would play a game with feats with...

    D&D 5E (2014) More Interesting Archers (+thread)

I agree with the OP. There is so much good space here to create some tactical choices for the archer and divide the archer/hunter/mobile warrior from the fighter. I love playing archer rangers in both 5e and 4e but I do miss the disruptive strike and combined fire abilities in 4e.

    D&D General On Grognardism...

I started playing D&D in 1982 but given that 4e is favorite of mine I cant say that I am a grognard. I liked the new ideas of 4e -even though it was far from perfect - and some of the these ideas have come through into 5e which I also enjoy. While I fell the pull of nostalgia in D&D I dont...

D&D 5E (2024) Change to Basic Class / Subclass design?

I agree that subclasses do need a bit of a rethinking going forward. I feel that subclasses carry a lot of a classes feel and fit too many different game design elements . In some cases it works great (cleric domains or warlock domains come to mind) but in some cases it is messy (ie in the...

D&D 5E (2014) The Dual Wielding Ranger: How Aragorn, Drizzt, and Dual-Wielding Led to the Ranger's Loss of Identity

Agree. I also think this points to the idea that the core archetype of the lightly armored mobile warrior should be called the Hunter rather than the Ranger.

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

Fair enough, I am not sure why I dont find the bonus action as intrusive as the minor action. In my experience in 4e, PCs would parse their character sheet looking for a minor action spell or power. Whereas in 5e seems the additional action comes from another decision/spell - so there are only...

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

Minor actions were for every PC at every turn, while bonus action are only for specific spells or abilities. IME minor actions slowed down play because everyone wanted to maximise their turn (coupled with 4e having a lot of minor action powers etc). So it slowed down an already slow system...

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

This has come up a couple times in this thread. How do people get confused by this mechanism or not like it? I think it is a good mechanic - IME it is far better than minor actions in 4e.

D&D 5E (2014) What Single Thing Would You Eliminate

There are a lot of small things Id like to give a small tweak (getting rid of concentration checks for damage for one) and big things that would demand big changes (like rethinking how D&D works at high level/13th level + or changing the game into only having short rests). But for me the thing...
