[Rant] Is Grim n Gritty anything more than prejuidice?

Well, do you have a complaint against, say, high fantasy, if it is thought of as anything more than setting fodder, since that's all it really is? I can agree that GnG is merely a style, if we understand that plot, setting and style are not hierarchized with respect to one another, that none is...

RotS - live action or animation movie? (Spoilers)

Those big things in the mines in Fellowship, along with pretty much everything Legolas rides, actually. There are many examples. I'd make a list but then I'd have to watch the movies again, and once through was more than enough for me, partially, but not entirely, because of the awful CGI.

    couple of RotS questions (spoilers)

Then you ought to understand the difference between your perspective, audience perspective in general that is, and truth. Part of the way narrative works is by manipulating your beliefs, but no narrative can control itself or you completely, so unintended beliefs always emerge, and if you're...

    Darth Plagius [SPOILERS]

It doesn't border on a certain RW religion at all. It's a motif you can find in any number of mythologies, and at its base it's simply an expression of the possibility of a divine birth ex nihil in human terms. Most mythologies contain a kind of uncreated god, an unmoved mover who is a cause...

Rate Revenge of the Sith *SPOILERS*

I don't recall it being casual at all. In the security hologram Palpatine says "Now, Lord Vader, go and bring peace to the Empire." Obi-Wan and Yoda begin referring to him as Emperor thereafter.

    Darth Plagius [SPOILERS]

That's where I disagree. Well, not with the heavy-handed symbolism, because I do agree that that was a pretty weak move on Lucas' part. But a dark side power that can spontaneously induce pregnancy in women being somehow "cooler"--I disagree with that. All arguments aside--the fact that...

RotS - live action or animation movie? (Spoilers)

LotR was horrible too. I'd say they were equally horrible, but the prequels have so much CGI that they come off much better, even though the two series have a comparable number of bad scenes.

    Darth Plagius [SPOILERS]

Bah, go and make a new thread for it after I've had my say.

    couple of RotS questions (spoilers)

Um, how is it a stretch to believe what the movies say flat out (back in TPM, in case you wiped your memory after suffering through, err, seeing it ;) )? Aside from it being an embarassingly common construction, Prophecy--Chosen One--Immaculate Conception, that, at least for me, doesn't suit...

    couple of RotS questions (spoilers)

Do you realize how much you're having to add to the story to make that interpretation work? A Sith might have made Anakin (no support for this), if the Jedi misinterpreted the prophecy (no real support for this, since Anakin does put an end to the Sith), if your interpretation of balance is...

    couple of RotS questions (spoilers)

I really think that's less of a hint and more of a very creative misinterpretation. Is there something in one of the books leading people in this direction? I dismiss it out of hand on the principle of charity: the only thing more ridiculous than midichlorians is a Sith Lord with the ability to...

I have developed wisdom: I recognize my shoddy workmanship.

Not that spending a dozen hours on one sentence or one line (which still isn't even a quarter as good as some other sentence or line that flashed randomly across your brain like a kind of creative electrical surge) isn't terribly fun.

    Anyone here ever have appendicitis?

I went to bed one night feeling perfectly normal, woke up the next day doubled over in pain and unable to swallow anything without...unswallowing it, and ended up having the surgery that night. You'll know if you need them out. It isn't really a stomach ache, more like a knife in your right side.

Best Acting in a Fantasy/Sci-fi Movie

Interview with the Vampire. All the performances were great, but I thought Tom Cruise and Kirstin Dunst were especially good.

Rate Revenge of the Sith *SPOILERS*

Well, part of my response to this is something that might seem a bit radical, but I'm going to say it anyway: I don't think people really know why they like or dislike a lot of things. Oh, they can offer lots of reasons, that's true, but that doesn't make them the right ones, and this can play...

So what do/did you study in college? Did you bother with college?

Hm, and I thought it didn't take a rocket scientist to play D&D. Maybe it was neurosurgeon?

Rate Revenge of the Sith *SPOILERS*

I think the opposite is true. If it weren't Star Wars, even Episodes I and II would have gotten a lot more slack. Or, for example, if this were the first Star Wars movie, if we didn't have any others, people would be touting it as the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Will anyone else be glad when Star Wars is finally over?

The thing is, someone could very well come along and make what, for you, would be the Perfect Science Fiction Film. But half the rest of the sci-fi viewing public would think your PSFF was a clunker.

So what do/did you study in college? Did you bother with college?

Cool. I did my BA at Cal as well, English with a minor in Latin and one class short of a minor in Philosophy (sleeping through midterms for the win, bad undergraduate). Doing my M.A. now and hope to head back there for the Ph.D. I actually say cool, though, for the cuneiform, which I'm beginning...

Will anyone else be glad when Star Wars is finally over?

It isn't over, I'm happy it isn't over, and I'd actually prefer the setting not be licensed out to more god-awful comics, books and videogames, although it will be.
