    I'm getting Edition War fatigue

Edition warring--far worse than what we see now--started the second 4e was announced, and all the evidence we have indicates 4e still outsold 3.5e easily. The argument doesn't have much to do with how many people are playing each edition. It has to do with the fact that ENWorld was a dedicated...

What do you get out of signatures?

Mine is to remind me not to bother responding to these same people. Before Heraclitus I had something from Chaim Perelman's Treatise on Argumentation, and before that something from Aristotle's Rhetoric, that said substantially the same thing: don't waste your time.

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

First, your desire to reframe the issue in terms of free speech is misguided. On ENWorld speech is a privilege, not a right, and that privilege is routinely and rightfully revoked for a variety of reasons--which you already know, since you yourself have had your posting privileges suspended on...

What's really at stake in the Edition Wars

Which is why when someone yells the nerd equivalent of "fire" in a crowded theater--in this case, yelling "4e plays like a glorified miniatures skirmish game" in a forum made up substantially of 4e fans--they should be held accountable for the resulting stampede. After all, aren't they...

Dear 4e, Please Stop with the Horrible Portmanteaus!

Although it should be "stop the horrible compounds." I haven't seen any portmanteaus in this thread so far. But Blackmoor (besides being a compound, not a portmanteau) is a well-known toponym and surname.

Pathfinder 1E Is PAIZO becoming the next Wizards?

A marketing filter is not the same thing as marketing speak. There's very little in the way of marketing speak on these boards, luckily. Off the top of my head, the last thing I remember seeing was the guy eyebeams called out for his Mouse Guard "review." Confused indeed. The antecedent of...

Pathfinder 1E Is PAIZO becoming the next Wizards?

I don't know what posts you've been reading. Offhand the only company I can think of with active ENWorld posters who don't strain everything they say through a marketing filter is White Wolf. Then again, being blunt instead of cagey could also be part of their marketing strategy.

Subjectivity, Objectivity, and One True Wayism in RPGs

Your two reasons are invalid for two more reasons. The first is that the subtlety of a hoax is a matter of perspective. I and a few others found Reveille's hoax to be equally unsubtle--and yet almost all of ENWorld fell for it. Do you know why? Good will. That's what the editors of Social Text...

Subjectivity, Objectivity, and One True Wayism in RPGs

If you weren't aware, the quote from Stanley Fish is a response to Sokal and to Sokal's misunderstanding of what he was attempting to criticize. It's also worth noting that Sokal chose an unrefereed journal for his hoax, and that the paper was only accepted on account of its author's academic...

Subjectivity, Objectivity, and One True Wayism in RPGs

Since we're being largely academic, let's first be clear that nobody actually says "since all our observations are subjective, we can never know objective truth." At least, nobody involved in the actual debate (the so-called "science wars") says this. On internet forums? Maybe. But not in the...

What kind of hit did DDI take a year after subscriptions started? Was it huge?

My experience is in the same vein: 0 out of 24-ish DDI subscribers that I know have RPG forum accounts of any kind. I highly doubt that our 1 in 31 combined figure holds across the board--that would be nearly 800,000 subscribers--but actual subscriptions are certainly much higher than 25,000.

What kind of hit did DDI take a year after subscriptions started? Was it huge?

Yup. I've seen multiple groups spontaneously form around the Character Builder. They've mostly been working folks who either never played or stopped playing when their free time dried up after college.

    [Trailer] The A-Team

Rampage is pretty much the definition of over-the-top. I'd post youtube links but the boards automatically embed them. Just search for "Rampage powerbombs Arona" or "Rampage humps reporter."

    Goodman Games solicits input

    a) I'm sure this is why the Character Builder is seen as indispensable by so many 4e players while those other tools are not seen as indispensable by their respective player bases. b) It's interesting that you would try to make this personal (my "standards" and "stuff [ I ] don't feel is good...

    Goodman Games solicits input

I don't. WotC's tools have all the options (including previews and exclusive content), balance fixes, errata, etc. Other tools do not. I look forward to seeing something similar from Paizo eventually, but right now there's nothing out there comparable to the DDI.

None of those tools has anywhere near the scope of the Character Builder or the Rules Compendium, unfortunately.

None of them has a Character Builder or a DDI at all.

    An incredible game review article

So you think it's the reviewers who come off looking bad? Interesting.

    Has Lovecraft become required reading?

He wrote the plays in both, not one or the other. Whether verse or prose is primary depends on the play, but they all (especially the comedies, and in increasing amounts as he matures) employ prose. Much Ado About Nothing, for example, is almost entirely prose, while the tragedies are primarily...

    Has Lovecraft become required reading?

Actually, Shakespeare wrote significant portions of the plays in prose. Most people just don't realize it because they don't know how to scan verse and the prose is (usually) printed with line breaks. For example, Hamlet: That's prose.
