    It's hard to avoid arguing

I don't think so. As I recall ENWorld policy even discourages telling someone you're going to add them to your list (at least, I saw someone warned by a moderator for it once upon a time).

    It's hard to avoid arguing

I very rarely bother posting for just this reason. In Aristotle's words: If I had to put a point on it, I guess I'd say that most of what goes on here isn't at all argument in the rhetorical sense. It's more like rationalization: instead of drawing conclusions based on evidence, people select...

Experts on other systems, why aren't they d&d?

And since we both interpret the same language the same way, it doesn't matter that our conclusions about the philosophical implications of that language differ.

Experts on other systems, why aren't they d&d?

It proves the opposite of his point, actually. We can follow him just fine. He's simply wrong. The fact that someone can be wrong has absolutely nothing to do with language not working. On the contrary: if language did not work, nobody could be wrong. He successfully asserted that language is...

Experts on other systems, why aren't they d&d?

If language were useless you wouldn't be able to tell us that language is useless, because, you know, language would be useless.

    'Zeno Clash' makers make sense..

I think it's that he isn't a native English speaker and just occasionally misunderstands things. That's what I've gathered from some of his other posts, anyway. I could be way off.

Stop Combining Words in RPGs! - Let English prevail

I don't think that was implied at all. Recognizing many of the nuances mentioned in this thread takes practice. It's quite possible for an unpracticed person to not recognize the sounds they're actually making, and in fact our brains work in such a way that as we acquire a language we lose the...

Stop Combining Words in RPGs! - Let English prevail

It's not unusual when speaking formally. Poets and people trained in giving readings of poems generally speak this way when they read, for example, in order to emphasize all the qualities of the words they're using. They also use fewer schwas. It does, but between the two vowels there is a...

Stop Combining Words in RPGs! - Let English prevail

Sorry if I wasn't clear. None of what you're posting are accurate phonetic transcriptions of these words. They're written by lexicographers to help laymen with pronunciation, nothing more. Actual linguists most certainly do not vary on this, and have more robust systems of notation than just the...

Stop Combining Words in RPGs! - Let English prevail

Hussar is right when it comes to most dialects of English, but you seem to be confusing pronunciation with orthography. Syllables that are immediately preceded by another syllable don't start with vowels, regardless of how they're spelled. "Liaison" has a glide to smooth over what would...

Exclusive interview WotC President Greg Leeds

It's quite possible to calculate. As with opinion polling, you use a statistical model. You do not attempt to count every download individually. To everyone saying this isn't reliable, something tells me you aren't particularly knowledgeable on the subject. For example: That's not how torrents...

How Has the WotC PDF Situation Affected You REALLY?

When people make with the dumb at ENWorld I just add them to my ignore list. If they represent a publisher, I also stop buying from that publisher. The only effect of this whole hubbub has been to double the length of my ignore list, cost several 3PPs my business, and save me time and money in...

    Weaning Off the Sauce

I don't think it's too uncommon for one person in a group to be the go-to guy when it comes to game selection or general outlook on the hobby.

Want to know how many people have downloaded a torrent? Just go to the torrent's page or look at its tracker. You don't need Big Brother to find this information--it's right there for absolutely anyone to see. Other file-sharing methods can be traced with more or less difficulty, but all can be...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

Are you knowledgeable about where most RPG pirating takes place? People with a passing familiarity tend to assume it's all torrents, but that's not the case. Torrents are mostly useful for large files or large groups of files (read: entire product lines), and they require more of a time...

WotC puts a stop to online sales of PDFs

This is completely untrue. PDFs of all Paizo and other 3PP products are widely available to anyone who knows where to look. Paizo has been no more successful in this regard than WotC.

Anyone else feel indifferent about the PDF thing?

Couldn't care less. It's amusing watching the echo chamber at work, though. WotC's reasoning is wrong, though: ending PDF sales will not curb piracy in any way whatsoever, so in that sense they're making a mistake.

    Terminator#21:TSCC-Adam Raised a Cain/Season 2/2009

I'm liking the show more and more as well, but don't confuse symmetry with depth.
