    Modernist and Postmodernist RPGs?

Ah, now I see where we're split. I'd actually say that Kant's refutation of idealism (Cartesianism specifically, really) in the first Critique, and his explicit rejection of the possibility of mind-body dualism, is what starts him down the path to modernity. Now, bearing that in mind, there are...

What would YOUR World of Darkness look like?

I don't know about reality (or Near Dark for that matter, which just didn't impress me), but yeah, I'd say more Hunter than any other WoD setting. Ditch the Heralds, Virtues, Creeds and all that typical White Wolf hokey, and you're left with a nice, dark, futile version of Supernatural.

    Modernist and Postmodernist RPGs?

Is he? He solved to his own satisfaction some issues that never troubled Plato, but I don't really see him as inaugurating an era of emphasis on the individual; but even if he had, Augustine beat him to the punch pretty handily. At any rate, by modern standards Descartes does little more than...

    Modernist and Postmodernist RPGs?

One of the major readings of Descartes sees this entire line of reasoning as committing him to a kind of Platonism, which I imagine is what Samnell was referring to. In any case, Descartes was not a modernist. Your typical survey of modern philosophy will use him as a point of departure, and he...

    Modernist and Postmodernist RPGs?

If you're having trouble telling modernism from postmodernism, it's because there are few clear distinctions between them. They're continuous with one another, and neither is entirely "new" (postmodernism, for example, begins as a reinvigoration of pre-Socratic philosophy, which is some 2600...

    Emphasizing Law vs. Chaos

That's a nice, succinct way of putting it.

    Emphasizing Law vs. Chaos

Weird. Google usually works for that kind of thing. It's actually from Ch. 9 of Sweet Violence: The Idea of the Tragic. It's a good book, and that chapter is probably worth a read if you really want to dig into the conceptual underpinnings of law and chaos (in literature, yeah, but also for...

    Emphasizing Law vs. Chaos

Not at all. In fact, philosophically, some have argued that chaos (demons) and evil (devils) are conceptually incompatible:

    D&D 4E 4E = BadWrongFun

Perhaps on account of such turns of phrase as "we all blindly follow the crowd like good little sheep?" Implying (and with such clichéd rhetoric, no less) that the people excited about 4e are lemmings, while those opposed to it are profound existential rebels, is just deeply, deeply silly.

    Sacred Cows You Hope Die?

And the direct reply to this is that those who actually love to play D&D have nothing to worry about, since the D&D they love to play is already out there and will not cease to exist on account of a new edition.

    D&D 4E 4e vs Min-Maxers

I don't see the problem though. Is it really that hard to gut min-maxing by putting the players in situations they aren't min-maxed for?

Why D&D Should Be More Like WoW

And besides, with 30 levels playable out of the box (and the possibility--some would say likelihood--of more to come) there's no reason a person can't indulge their character-building whims simply by starting their game at level 3 or 5 or 10. That added granularity opens up some fun...

Of fun and games; was "WoW is not an RPG"

Agreed. WoW can be played like an RPG, just like D&D can be played like a wargame. Most people may play each game a certain way, but this in no way disguises the fact that WoW and D&D can be played nearly identically by anyone so inclined.

    New Highlander (TV) Movie

The movie was OK, but a lot of people are going to hate it. The cut they released in Russia has been floating around since late 2006, but supposedly the one they're planning to release in the US is going to be different (read: better). I guess we'll see.

Good but obscure movies you've recently discovered...

If you liked Primer (or, to a lesser extent, The Butterfly Effect), you'll probably also like Donnie Darko (or, to a lesser extent, Fetching Cody).

Good but obscure movies you've recently discovered...

Nice thread. I haven't gotten to Silk yet and hadn't even heard of Immortel. I'll move them to the top. Not all recently discovered, but all viewed within the last month. I keep a running list: Brick Henry Fool Fay Grim Zero Day Before Sunrise Before Sunset Invisible Mountains Igby Goes Down...

What games do Wizards designers play?

It's from a genre of tactical Starcraft/Warcraft 3 map called an AoS (Aeon of Strife). DotA (Defense of the Ancients) Allstars is currently the most popular example among Warcraft 3 players.

This Weekend at the Boxoffice: 2007_June_04

It's only 3 million behind Spidey 3 once you subtract budgets (60 mil to 57 mil gross). Disturbia was a fun movie.
