D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

I'm a bit confused by the change in your tone and attitude since your post a couple of pages back, which I felt was both reasonable and constructive. I'd like to keep this thread from descending into snark and sniping if possible, and I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on my reply. I'll be...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

Just a quick one on this before I head out - proper replies to everyone tomorrow - I posted about this specific thing in some detail here (a little way down the post). Basically at low levels you cast 1 Burning Hands per encounter when you can catch 2 or 3 opponents in it and then plink with a...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

I don't think that's fair to say. 'Badass Normal' has an entirely different meaning in D&D, and there's no basis for the apparently widespread belief that characters who can't cast spells should be unable to go beyond real world human limits. Nobody in the real world could kill a dragon with a...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

I have to agree with this. 'If you want to be powerful, maybe you should play something other than a Fighter' is not a helpful or constructive argument.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I have played at higher levels, up to 20, and posted about my experience both specifically and by reference in my other posts. Is there anything in particular that you'd like to know? I must say, though, I'm very leery of the amount of 'well at MY table' I've seen in these kinds of arguments -...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Thank you - and I really mean that. Talking to Sacrosanct is starting to feel a bit like banging my head against a brick wall, but it's heartening to know someone's getting something out of my posts. That's a good, reasonable list, and I agree that it shouldn't be necessary. I will point out...

Can you give an example? The only occasion I can think of is against Xaltotun, who is in turn easily defeated when the Heart of Ahriman is stolen from him.

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I'm sorry, but this isn't accurate. At level 1 you're fighting enemies like goblins and orcs. A wizard with a longbow will have the same attack bonus as a Fighter (+5) and deal 1d8+3 damage when he hits. That's enough to kill a goblin in 1 hit and an orc in 2 hits on average - the same as a...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I agree. It makes no sense to me whatsoever to give one group of classes their pick from a list of hundreds of concrete mechanical effects and to leave the other group to negotiate with the DM every time they want to do something.

It triples your jump distance (for all jumps, not just running long jumps) for 1 minute. So a 10 Str Wizard can clear 30 ft. Also, 25 feet in armour is great, but you can't jump any further naked and the real world record is 29 ft 4.25 inches. Also, the earliest you can jump 25 feet (i.e. have...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Just another gentle reminder that you’re the only one engaging in purely abstract white room arguments here (e.g. 'but casters won't always have access to their spells!'). I’ve given gameplay examples of many different situations in which a caster obsoletes a Fighter, and I will compile them...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

You said, specifically, that the Wizard might not have had access. As in, at no point. I said, specifically, yes they have - they've picked from the entire list of possible spells each time they gained a level, with no DM intervention or permission required. That is my point on this subject...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

You're right that the rules are clear. Restrained is a defined condition with defined effects, none of which are 'you do not have free use of either hand'.

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

Okay. I've just got back from my 5e game. Let's do this. You're moving the goalposts again. The statement of yours that I was responding to reads "casters [might not] have had access to the spell to begin with". My answer was to quote the rules which state that they automatically gain access...

D&D 5E (2014) Class Analysis: Fighter and Bard

My apologies in advance for the length of this post - it grew and grew in the writing as I looked back over the thread - but there is a whole lot to respond to. Okay. Leaving aside the Eldritch Knight (because we're talking about non-spellcasters) let's look at what the Fighter gets that helps...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

I've played a bunch of PF and a little 3.5, and 5e is definitely a big improvement from both in terms of limiting Wizards - particularly the Concentration mechanic, though that mostly for the hard limit on spells-at-a-time rather than breaking spells with damage (at least at higher levels). But...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

Nothing's forcing you to start at level 1! We've hopped around at several levels, (up to 20) and found a whole bunch of interesting/broken things so far: Resilient (Con) + War Caster allows casters to essentially never fail Concentration checks because of damage (up to 99.8% odds of passing...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

The experiences posted in this thread so far that mention a level were at levels 1, 3, 5, 6, 9 and 12, and the level 6 and 12 players report spellcasters dominating. I expect that the relatively low levels it seems most people have played at so far are contributing to the perception of balance...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5th Edition -- Caster Rule, Martials Drool?

Caster supremacy is alive and well in 5e - including the supremacy of full casters over the Eldritch Knight and Arcane Trickster. Also, I'm not quite sure why everyone is so excited by the Rogue. They do decidedly mediocre damage, and considerably less than the Fighter: On the contrary...

    D&D 5E (2014) 5.0 necromancer

It's not just using multiple spell slots as a bonus action that's the problem. It's doing so every round for 24 hours. Let's look at Fireball. Here's a table showing the damage you can expect to do to a single target, on average, by spending every level 3 or above spell slot on Fireballs - as...
