D&D 5E (2014) Why Forums Should Be Ignored By Game Developers

I think the forums can be helpful. They can give you an idea of what rules are confusing and what ones are popular, as well as overall game popularity. But designing a game? That's where I think they can get some bad data and sink their edition. Especially if the community is heavily divided...

D&D 5E (2014) I might have bitten off more than I can chew

My group and I got together and worked on creating a rather unique DnD setting. One that could be adapted easily from setting to setting. And we might have gotten too ambitious. The key item that we're working on are the magic-powered mechs. As in, Battletech mechs. Only, armed with magical...

New Releases In Stores This Week : 16th January 2017

I see a lot of Cthulhu stuff. I may need to take out a small loan for it all.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

The Meenlocks make me wonder what the fey world looks like for 5E. I've wondered it in the past, but they're really the ones who drop the hint that sections of it may be truly Lovecraftian in nature. I would definitely use them to surprise a low-level group who hear there's a fey problem and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

    Those look like mutant weasels.

D&D 5E (2014) What books from previous editions do you tend to mine for material?

Right now, I'm mining a lot of setting material from prior editions. Sometimes making alterations to reflect details I like better. Monsters and such I'm leery about converting at the moment because it's looking like WotC may start doing those conversions on a much larger scale.

    DOORS!

Random door generation charts are usually in the DMG. For example, in 5E they're in the DMG on page 291.

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

I'm kinda snickering at the thought of them running a Faerun game similar to Minecraft. Imagine spending five weeks raising cows just to make leather armor.

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

That's why I suggested the two companies I did. BeamDog's DnD games are advertised on the DnD website, and Harebrained Schemes is currently finishing their fourth video game using IP owned by Catalyst.

Explain to me again, how we know the Earth to be banana shaped.

The simpler possibility is the ring spins around the sun, with plates in the sky to block sunlight and simulate light that spin in the opposite direction of the ground. Long-enough plates and with the right rotation speeds, you could replicate a day as we know it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Let's Read: Volo's Monsters

I finally managed to track the mythological origin of korred down, and it explains everything about their design in Volo's. Korred are British dwarf-trolls.

    D&D 5E (2014) Spell Component Game!

Rat Tongue The target of this spell can only chitter like a rat when they try to communicate. Even nonverbal communications. All written efforts simply produce the word "chitter" over and over again. Component: Elminister

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

If they licensed it to Harebrained, we'd get a hell of a game by the end. Knowing them? They'd pitch something like the amount of content Sword Coast Legends was supposed to get, and by the time the stretch goals were exhausted we'd end up with something around twice the content of Neverwinter...

D&D 5E (2014) Other ways to overcome the monster

One of the more fun aspects of a charismatic paladin is using that charisma to turn enemies into converts and allies. And then smiting anyone who can't be lured. The first time I did it, the DM had a succubus trying to seduce my paladin. The DM didn't expect my paladin to flirt back. Or the...

D&D 5E (2014) What would you put in Volume 2 of Tales of the Yawning Portal

Maybe one where you're hunted by an insane talking dinosaur who makes babbling, incoherent explanations of how his magic items work that are frankly impossible, yet somehow always work no matter what? And who keeps creating abominations of nature, including a mixed-species dinosaur hybrid with...

D&D 5E (2014) What happened to the punk aesthetic in D&D?

I don't have time to vet the 3PP material like I'd like to, so I stick to publishers I already know produce quality material. That also means I don't allow DM's Guild stuff, simply because I don't have the time to go through all of it. And homebrewing... If I want a system for extensive mixing...

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

No, I wouldn't. A game engine can be a total mess if designed improperly and result in half of what you accomplish being purely finding a way to use the quirks to your advantage. But at the same time, 3E material and even material not native to the game when it was published (in the case of...

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

I wouldn't be surprised if a new one is coming that is 5E. It shouldn't take that much to modify the existing engine to be 5E ruleset.

D&D 5E (2014) What would you put in Volume 2 of Tales of the Yawning Portal

I would include a new dungeon, one invented specifically for the book. Maybe one with nothing but traps and hostile spider monkeys... Imagine a spider monkey barbarian/sorcerer.

New Digital Games Studio announced by the president of Wizards of the Coast

They could probably do a good DnD game if they subcontracted. BeamDog is proving adept at handling the Baldur's Gate series, and Harebrained Schemes is increasingly proving capable of delivering games massively above the quality standard you'd expect from a studio so small and has proven...
