Winter Fantasy 2016 DD Experience Impressions from Track C

Posted this on the facebook group but I'm posting here for posterity sake. Some awesome adventures happened at Winter Fantasy. I played an arrogant/oblivious Arcana Cleric named Herlock. I'm not sure I've ever had such intense fun at a con. The epic was was an adrenline rush as players darted...

    Free DM's Guild Five-Star Freebies

Thanks for the review and exposure! This is a work I am pretty proud of that took quite a bit of hours writing and months to balance to the satisfaction of about half a dozen play test groups. I'm not the best editer but I hope that DM's will be able to use it in some way. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) [Out of the Abyss]Magic item distribution?

The Ruby Spell gem is crazy powerful. Especially since (AFAIK) it isn't just a ring of spell storing but it uses the GEM'S stats for casting (18 spell DC and +10 to hit). The blessings you can get for NOT stealing the gem are also crazy powerful. (+1 to ac and saving throws or any nonmagical...

    Cutting Words Canceling Nat 20

THAT actually makes sense (although it reeks of legalese like what the definition of "is" is). An "attack roll" is d20 plus modifiers. Adding or subtracting like bane or bless occur as a bonus or penalty. The "roll" referenced in cutting words is the raw d20 roll before modifiers have been...

D&D "ask me anything" on Reddit 1/15 at 3 pm PST

I dunno. Why not release it all at once? *shrugs* Just go look at facebook. People are crazy up in there.

D&D "ask me anything" on Reddit 1/15 at 3 pm PST

Restless to say the least. Part of me feel like they are delivering the bad news and letting people dwell on it so the mediocre news is going to look good by comparison. Not to sound so cynical but the changes are really leaving a bad taste in my mouth so far.

Legality of AL adventures on Dungeon Masters Guild

As of right now, there isn't a whole lot of incentive to play at a store vs playing at home. You can be more selective with your group and get all the same benefits. As long as you show up for "Launch Day" you are golden. Especially if they admins can't get certs for stores approved.

    Cutting Words Canceling Nat 20

I agree :) To rephrase: When I am playing as a bard and I give out one of my precious Bardic Inspirations to a player and they try to use it get get a "20", I will no longer be giving them bardic inspiration, because that is the worst use of that resource I can imagine. (Slight spoiler but no...

    Cutting Words Canceling Nat 20

Back when I first started, I originally read it as a reduction of the value on the die. Another player and I debated and I conceded. I'm fine with Crawford's ruling. As far as crits, only a 20 on a die roll hits. I play a bard during one of my sessions and if a player of mine ever tried to use...

    Find Steed

I'd rather not be micromanaged on every nuance and I'm sure they don't want that headache either. The DM can flat out tell you nothing outside of the normal spell. This is really a non-issue in my opinion. Do you really know a DM who would allow a giant ape? That sounds like a slippery slope if...

    Find Steed

To add to that, The steed summoned from Find Steed is mechanically unique. It does not have a separate initiative order but is can take its own attack action. I don't see an issue (using standard mounts) with having the mount attack while a player is mounted. If someone really wanted to be a...

    Find Steed

Ahh yep you did say that earlier. Too much time had passed since I had read this post last and I had forgotten. :)

    Find Steed

It matters because your giant ape mount gets two attacks at 3d10+6 each. Maybe you as a DM would allow it, but I wouldn't. Unless there is a new AL guidance on the spell, the only requirement is that it is an animal, not that it has type beast. "(Your DM mught allow other animals to be...

In Bruenor’s Service (and the AL ammendments)

In Bruenor’s Service (and the AL ammendments) Are the rewards he offers like the armor and titles given immediately when they are given their quest to go back down into the earth? I don't see when else they would see Bruenor to receive rewards.

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a way to negate critical hits without adamantine armour?

With Bless it becomes a wash, if 20 is the only number you get a crit with. Because a normal 20 roll would not be a crit anymore since you would have yet to add the d4. I wouldn't care either way. With bardic inspiration, if your players are really using it to try to get 20 on a number, I would...

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a way to negate critical hits without adamantine armour?

As a DM i would say that If you managed to roll exactly a 20 (not a 21 or greater) I would allow it. Just like how vorpal sword triggers off of a 20 on the die, not just a "crit" like with a champions' improved critical.

D&D 5E (2014) Is there a way to negate critical hits without adamantine armour?

According to Crawford, cutting words cuts crits: Q: Can I cancel a "Natural 20 Critical Hit" using Cutting Words? A: Yes, You can. https://twitter.com/JeremyECrawford/status/672608353487470592 "...you can use your reaction to expend one of your uses of Bardic Inspiration, rolling a Bardic...

Well It's really nice on undead. So it can help reign in the power of mid to high level necromancer. (brainstorming reasons as to why it is the way it is)

DM Encounter Flexibility for Published Adventures

How much flexibility do DM's have for published adventures? Many of the players continuously complain that everything is too easy. (Granted they are a little higher level than they should be.) Just trying to think of solutions.
