I don't see how. I believe that as soon as you hit the target it is no longer surprised.

FYI ambuscade is attack or hide only. No movement and no spell casting. "Rangers strike first and strike hard. When you roll initiative, you gain a special turn that takes place before other creatures can act. On this turn, you can use your action to take either the Attack or Hide action."

There aren't technically surprise rounds, there is surprise condition. If the target can see you at the beginning of initiative they they aren't going to be surprised. You have to be hidden before initiative is rolled and the target fails perception of you. page 189: Any character or monster...

Yea that's a good point. Abuscade doesn't make the enemies surprised. This feature doesn't suddenly make assassin's crit any more than they would normally or if they grabbed the alert feat. True, but if you are the only one who can go first, it will be harder to set up sneak attack in most...

Yea I agree with you too that it's a good start. I think the 2d6 will be ok because they don't get any other damage mitigation. Barbarians also get rage, unarmored defense, and unarmored movement. I feel like this is an attempt to make the ranger tankier without giving them evasion/dodge...

I third this. Another example: Peter Pan is Whimsical. Peter Pan the original story had darker tones (the kids "disappeared" when they grew up). The Child Thief takes whimsy and darkness to the next level, its horrifyingly good.
