I have never played Warhammer Fantasy, although I am familiar with it due to internet osmosis. However, for what it is worth, the cover does not seem to fit the "grim, grime, and blood" that said osmosis has brought me to associate with Warhammer Fantasy.

You are correct in that it takes two swings to down a 3.X PC. However, that is trivial to fix, by requiring either a roll for hit points, or backwards-extrapolation of the alternate rules for average HP gain per level. With an average Fighter 1 having 7 HP, a single longsword swing of 1d8+2...
