D&D 5E (2014) Mitigating players spamming Help, Guidance, Bardic Inspiration, and oh I’ll roll too?

Help - Only works if the help is reasonably explained. Someone not knowing anything about picklocking cannot help picklocking a lock. I often allow it, because the DC is often expecting it to be used. For example if we consider a DC10 = Easy as per definition, that would mean an average human...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fear spell

Quite varied answers. I think the section 5ekyu and UngeheuerLich quoted is actually the relevant part here for me. As a DM I definitely see taking an item from a hostile creature's space as particularly difficult and consequently it would require an action. What action, I guess I'll leave to...

    New Survey

Yeah I pretty much put "Not interested" everywhere too. Then selected "other" and mentioned that one thing I'd actually buy would be the rule books in PDF version so I can word search through them.

    New Survey

Seems the survey is more directed towards players than DMs. Nothing related to my non-existent PCs is important to me... Funny that the highest you can choose is "a few months later". I heard about D&D from video games when I was a child... probably around 1988. But wasn't interested much in...

How Do You Like Your Death in D&D

In my games, death happens mostly due to bad strategies / decisions during combat. Of course luck still plays a part, but I usually don't let my players face a threat they could not survive if they use good strategies (or know when to run). So basically whether they live or die their decisions...

Ever try PC death at 0 hit points?

I personally tell my players I'm combat focused and like to give them a potentially deadly challenge. But a good challenge for me means that their survival depends on how good their strategy is. I honestly haven't met any player yet who enjoys dying just because of a bad roll.

Games are meant to be fun and not immitate real life.

    D&D 5E (2014) Fear spell

I guess my PCs could just resolve this with a Shove attack. Seems intended to be situational if it works or not. But if I tell my players "If you come up with a good plan then I'd allow it", it would just result with them coming up with something every single time. Maybe I say if anything you...

How do you play a character who is much smarter than you are?

    D&D 5E (2014) [PotA] Background Story

I do think it's more interesting to have reveals coming from time to time rather than all at once. But that goes both ways. Revealing everything right away is just as bad as revealing everything after the adventure is over. That's why I'm particularly curious where things could potentially be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Fear spell

I was wondering what balanced handling for the Fear spell would be, especially the part about dropping what your holding. I found several discussions on disarming but none of fear, but it's quite similar. The core question seems to be "Can you pick up an item in an enemy's space as your free...

    D&D 5E (2014) [PotA] Background Story

Hi all, I need some pointers on this. Elemental Evil has quite some background story to it and I was wondering if all of that is revealed in the later chapters of the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure path. I ask this because I'm wondering what I can tell my players early on and what should...

    Running a Stand-in PC

We just ignore that the PC is there most of the time and it works quite well. As long as you don't speak it out, it can be anything.

Preserving the Fear Inherent in 1st Level

My players are always scared of death throughout the campaign. What I do: - I tell my players during recruitment already, that I'm a DM that's very unforgiving and will actually try to get them killed every battle (that's what I tell them but in reality there are a few rules I set myself as for...

Ever try PC death at 0 hit points?

My philosophy as DM is to only kill PCs if their players did an actual mistake. If 0 HP meant dead in D&D 5e, I couldn't even attack any of my players because a single crit might make them drop to 0. I prefer being able to go all out on them. On a sidenote, I always thought Akitoshi Kawazu's LP...

D&D 5E (2014) Creatures partially in an area of effect. How are they affected.

Basically what I do is not apply grid rules at all for anything other than movement (and this also only if I use a map at all, I often switch between map and theatre of mind depending on what seems more fun for the current encounter). Without grid rules you don't even need to roll to see if...

D&D 5E (2014) Creatures partially in an area of effect. How are they affected.

Well, can you? Because by Bluejay Junior's interpretation, if you opt to to not include the point of origin, you're effectively moving the AoE 5ft away from you and consequently also place your enemies outside of the AoE at the same time (in case of choosing the bottom side of the cube as point...
