    D&D 5E (2014) Hiding in dim light / darkness

I got confused here. If someone hides in dim light, do the enemies get disadvantage on perception? If someone hides in complete darkness, do the enemies automatically fail perception? In other words, is knowing where someone is a check that relies on sight? You would argue it relies on both...

    D&D 5E (2014) Noticing a minor illusion as threat

I'm wondering, let's say a group hunts an adventurer. He then creates a minor illusion of himself and hides. The group notices the minor illusion and immediately wants to attack it. Are they still surprised because a minor illusion is not a threat that can be noticed or are they not surprised...

D&D 5E (2014) Player vs DM dice rolls

My players don't really laugh at me, but I like to see their "phew, we are lucky" and "oh no, a 20" faces.

    D&D 5E (2014) RAW: XP until death

RAW doesn't say much about it other than: How to reward XP is usually handled by the adventure paths themselves. Some are very clear on how much XP to reward for what. So let's take a look at the (more strict) adventure league rules: As you can see, it pretty much refers to the adventures...

D&D 5E (2014) Player vs DM dice rolls

When the player wants his PC to do something and the result isn't clear, the DM asks the player to do a dice roll. If the player makes his PC run into a trap, the DM asks the player to do a saving throw. If the DM does actions for NPCs where the result isn't clear, he rolls himself. Some DMs...

    D&D 5E (2014) Adjusting Wildshape

I'm using the Unearthed Arcana rules where it's fairly hard to learn new forms, limiting the possible forms to a small amount that you can easily keep overview on. For tracking which forms have been learned I ask my Druid to write the forms he learned onto his character sheet.

    D&D 5E (2014) When you reduce a creature's hit points to 0

Yep. I think it's actually the easier way to rule it too. So I'll use it. Thanks.

    D&D 5E (2014) PotA Rivergard Keep Doors

Ok, so I was wondering and need a quick neutral opinion: The AP refers to "interior doors" and "exterior doors", what does that refer to? Are exterior doors only the two double doors that actually lead into the keep or are exterior doors all doors from the yard into a building too?

    D&D 5E (2014) When to Award XP?

I reward XP after every battle, but that does not mean characters have to instantly level up. I go by AL rules where you won't level up until you do a long rest (or finish the module) even if you reached the XP needed.

    D&D 5E (2014) When you reduce a creature's hit points to 0

I see, so you see it like a reward from the Dark One for extinguishing life. I was thinking of it more like sucking out life force through magic, so I was thinking that maybe it only applies to when for example Eldritch Blast kills the target and not the fall caused by its (extra) pushback effect.

    D&D 5E (2014) When you reduce a creature's hit points to 0

Some traits like Dark One's Blessing refer to reducing the hit points of the target to 0. How would you rule it if the target dies from falling damage? Did the attacker reduce the hit points of the target to 0 or did the fall do that?

D&D 5E (2014) Noticing an unseen hidden character by touching?

I'm unsure how to rule it. We already established via Sage Advice that hiding ends when someone can be seen clearly. So that usually works fine for my group. But there can be the situation that a character is unseen (invisibility, darkness) even if the enemy is standing next to him. So what...

    D&D 5E (2014) Is D&D a Story or a Game? Discuss.

Neither. It's a guideline for creating a fun story and game.

D&D 5E (2014) What to do about flakes?!

It really gets me worked up when someone doesn't show up. I'm even considering taking money for each session ahead of time, then give the money back to the people who actually showed up. The remaining money is collected and I pay stuff like adventure paths and maps from it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Question about potions

This is not the real world, it's the D&D world and there you can tell a potion's effect by tasting it, apparently. And this is also the best way to play, because having tons of unidentified items is not only less fun but also a lot of trouble for the DM because he needs to keep track of all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Observations of a new player

If you give out XP rewards by combat rather than by milestone then the PCs usually end up underleveled. That's my simple solution to keep the game deadly throughout the game. :p

    D&D 5E (2014) Observations of a new player

Level 1-2 isn't really a "Hero" for me yet. More like a soldier. Can fight, but in a battle they still drop like nameless flies. :p I always see those two levels as introduction. For new players to the game I always start here, so the players slowly get to learn their characters and have some...

D&D 5E (2014) Move spell with no line of sight?

So to cast an AoE spell you need to have line of sight to its point of origin. And it was already clarified in Sage Advice that you don't need to keep line of sight to the spell, even if it requires concentration. But what about spells that you can move as a bonus action? Can you move them even...
