D&D 5E (2014) Radius AoE also on walls?

So I've been having lots of target and AoE discussions with my players lately and most of them I could answer, but about one thing I wasn't 100% sure and wanted to get some other opinions. Let's take the spell "Spike Growth", it just refers to "ground" and "radius". My druid was arguing that...

    My Short Rest DM trick...

I allow my players to try short rests, but they definitely can't roll hit dice until I told them they finished the rest successfully (which they might or might not, if they are resting a dangerous area).

D&D 5E (2014) Fire-hating creature, how do they make light?

They don't have darkvision, they are humans. Maybe I'll just make them glow in blue.

D&D 5E (2014) Fire-hating creature, how do they make light?

So let's say there is a group of NPCs that hate fire, but they have to scout something during the night. How would they create light? I'd assume they wouldn't want to use torches and lanterns. And unfortunately, they don't have the light spell available either (only spells available are Chill...

D&D 5E (2014) Stealth Checks - How do you handle them?

The moment stealth applies, both can potentially notice each other. Let's say the adventurer's are on a position that they can't be noticed at all, but they notice an intruder because they set up an alarm. Then they are aware of a threat but the threat isn't aware of them. No rolls done. Now...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aerial Combat

Well, you certainly can dash on your mount, but then you'll fall off!

D&D 5E (2014) Stealth Checks - How do you handle them?

I don't allow to roll stealth until there's someone that could potentially see you. On a failed roll, the players notice immediately anyway, because the one that notices them will react to them. No need to hide rolls that way.

    D&D 5E (2014) Aerial Combat

Yeah, it's like normal combat, but there are a few things to consider: 1. You can't "Dash", if anything, your mount could do it as you are using its movement. Whether you can bring your mount to do it I'd make it depend on how familiar the PC is with the mount (usually not familiar enough)...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aerial Combat and Net

Yeah, I mean adventurer's could just buy nets and rent an aerial mount and then hunt strong monsters in the air at low level and throw nets at them, making them take 20d6 falling damage. Then could powerlevel pretty fast like that. (Also seems a bit anticlimatic in an adventure where you want...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aerial Combat and Net

True, 20d6 is max damage. I like the reasoning that the creature will get one attempt to break free before hitting the ground. Then the players need to be very lucky to succeed.

    D&D 5E (2014) Aerial Combat and Net

So let's assume there's aerial combat at 400ft height, the adventurers against a strong flying creature. One of the adventurers uses a Net to attack and the attack succeeds. Does the creature immediately fall 400ft to the ground and take 40d6 damage? Seems a bit overpowered.

D&D 5E (2014) DM forgets to mention and describe a plot point, how should that be addressed?(Storm King's Thunder:possible minor spoilers)

I guess as DM it's generally better to think "What could I have described better for my players to notice it" instead of "Why don't my player notice this obvious fact?".

D&D 5E (2014) DM forgets to mention and describe a plot point, how should that be addressed?(Storm King's Thunder:possible minor spoilers)

I have a DMing style where I just don't tell my players everything that's around them just because they walk past it. Instead, I tell them what they see when they specifically ask for it. So luckily, I can mostly rely on my players reminding me to tell them. So for me it would probably go like...

    D&D 5E (2014) Retireing characters

If someone wants to play a new character, I'll find a good way for his current character to leave (he won't just turn to thin air, he doesn't have to die either, maybe just leaving to follow a personal goal). I would never disallow it, because what's worse that changing characters is a player...

    D&D 5E (2014) A bit of a dilemma

I don't really like using milestone leveling myself. My thoughts: - Dungeons in D&D 5e actually seems to be quite doable even when a level below the recommended level (it might just mean the group can't clear the dungeon in one go) - I give XP for avoided combat as well, like for example if the...

    D&D 5E (2014) A bit of a dilemma

Two things (I haven't played the module so I'll have to go by your context): 1. Players find out the enemies head west, return to NPC and tell him. At that point I'd make the NPC say "Hmm west you say? That's pretty vague, I'm not sure we could find them like that, did you find any others...

D&D 5E (2014) Just for fun: Dungeon Master Patron

When I read the title I actually thought of a real life Dungeon Master patron. Like a second person behind the DM screen that helps the DM if he gets stuck or needs a clarification / hint.

    D&D 5E (2014) Scroll of Revivify

Spoiler: I'm pretty sure the main purpose of the Scroll of Revivify in the castle is to revive Gundren. The module even mentions reviving him.

    D&D 5E (2014) Scroll of Revivify

Lost Mine of Phandelver pretty much assumes you are playing with the starter set characters: http://media.wizards.com/downloads/dnd/StarterSet_Charactersv2.pdf That includes a Cleric that can use the Scroll of Revivify for sure.

D&D 5E (2014) Concurrent initiative variant; Everybody declares/Everybody resolves [WAS Simultaneous Initiative]

I'm playing PbP and before I came to D&D, I pretty much always did it so that players just stated what they want to do (all together) and then I decided what monster actions would be reasonable. And then I rolled it all out, including checks on who is faster in a conflict. And from the results I...
