    TPKs; Where do you restart?

If a single PC dies, I talk with the player and work out a reasonable way he can jump in with a new character (or revive his old). It's really not that hard. As for TPK, I end the adventure and start a completely new one.

    D&D 5E (2014) The Problem with Constitution

Honestly, in my games, I do two things: 1. Make all kinds of skills useful by providing various opportunities to use them. 2. Allow players to somewhat control "aggro" by positioning and provocations. Now if I look at my games: - It is true that all my player have a CON of 12 or higher - It is...

The help action is not broken, but Working together is

I think the DC already considers having advantage on pretty much every check. That's why "medium challenge" translates to a DC of 15 rather than 10. It's not broken, but instead a particularly smart implementation: Your players will be happy because their smart approach to solve the problem...

    We learn more from failure...

I don't reward XP for failure, but I tend to bring my players into a similar situation they failed before and without having to give the PCs any benefits they resolve it better the second time around. So because my players learned from failure, they automatically get a better result. Of course...

D&D 5E (2014) yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

Still think this is very group-dependent. If we look at it, there are two ways of handling persuasion. You let the player state what he does and decide on how well it was done if a roll is needed, if it is at advantage, a normal roll or even disadvantage. Or, you let the player roll and ask him...

D&D 5E (2014) yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

Honestly if a fighter had +3 persuasion and a warlock has +5 persuasion and both try to persuade someone together, I'd let the Warlock roll at advantage and consider the fighter providing "Help" like with the help action.

D&D 5E (2014) yes, this again: Fighters need more non-combat options

There's no easy solution to this as this is often less an issue with the class having too low skill modifiers and more of a problem with the player not being able to come up with clever ideas without having any spell list at hand. Sure there may be some other issues... like wearing heavy armor...

D&D 5E (2014) Suggested nerf to the Shield spell

But telling them there's nothing wrong with [whatever they complain about] is helping them.

    Illogical Truth - Multiple Attacks?

Only if you get the corresponding invocation. But you'll probably do if you plan to use EB as your main damage spell (so there's hardly any point in getting Fire Bolt as Warlock, you will want utility cantrips aprt from EB as your main spells are always of highest level and consequently more...

D&D 5E (2014) Suggested nerf to the Shield spell

The only balance problem with shield is when there's only 1 or 2 PCs. If there are 3+ PCs, I simply make my monster attack the ones not affected by the spell this round. So at most shield is useful for a single attack. Even if the whole work day only has one encounter, I can get in more than...

    Houserules for tools

Xanathar's Guide is excellent for improving tools. I usually don't allow optional / variant rules, but I found these so awesome that I allowed them.

Sorry Folks, I just can't get into 5e

I never really got into D&D until 5e, it's the only ruleset I found simple enough (+having free basic rules available helped a lot), yet still having enough different build possibilities. But honestly, I only find it natural to stick with the ruleset you've learned. I wouldn't see any need to...

How to make an encounter with falling great distances interesting and dangerous, but not deadly?

I managed to make my "falling" issues interesting by giving players a turn to react to it (if outside combat). For example my Warlock was about to fall down which would have been deadly, but I told him he still has 6 seconds to react and asked if he wants to do something. He then had the idea to...

Skills used by players on other players.

It's only two simple unwritten rules, that wouldn't even need to be said because it's simply common courtesy. But at the latest you clarify this in Session 0. It's nothing that should come up while playing. I don't think anyone would see this as very limiting to be honest. Except trolls and...

    Cantrip Auto-Scaling - A 5e Critique

I guess a quick fix to that would be to make spellcasters actually lose lower level spell slots and gain more higher level ones. For example at level 5 your 1st level spell slots become 2nd level spell slots. Basically the Warlock is already like that. But as the others said, you can still use...

Skills used by players on other players.

I just don't allow any offensive actions between party members, including convincing and casting charm spells and whatsoever. I also don't tell my players what they should do. They can try to do whatever they want. If my party can't decide which plan to follow, I allow them to all roll...

Do We Really Need Half-Elves and Half-Orcs?

Pretty sure it's half-orcs and not orcs because orcs would be naturally evil aligned which is a killer for most PC parties. Anyway, Umbran already said anything that's needed to be said. Don't remove anything unless you have a good reason to do so.

    D&D Basic Rules Updated

I play online so there's no printing, I just link to the document. Yeah if they wanted to "cheat" they could, but this is most like stumbling on that info and not being able to resist reading it.

    D&D Basic Rules Updated

I don't like that they've been combined into a single document. Don't want my players to have access to DM stuff like monster stats. Also makes things harder to find.

Questions on "Sight" Spells, and Ready Spell Action

You can take reactions on your own turn and even trigger ready actions, but if you ready an action until your next turn, you immediately consume an action to keep concentration or you need to drop it. So it's impossible to start your turn while concentrating on a spell with an action still...
