    Banishing Eldritch Blast

I honestly just see Eldritch Blast as the Warlock's normal attack, especially when he specializes on it. I mean sure, my fighter uses his normal attack most of the time during combat, does that mean I need to nerf it so he also uses Grapple, Shove, Help and other available actions? Nope. My...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow lucky feat and Wiz. divination portent feature for downtime activity rolls?

Wrong way to look at it imo. This is not about fairness, this is about: "Only ask players to roll for something when rolling actually results in more fun for the group." Now in the current situation I'd say: When failing just means paying more money and spending more time, that doesn't result...

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow lucky feat and Wiz. divination portent feature for downtime activity rolls?

That's not a core rule, right? Why not make the cost and time fixed? Seems more fun, than Player A needing to pay double as much and take double as long for his level up than Player B just because he rolled worse.

D&D 5E (2014) I need some help with a few basic rules clarifications

I'm sure the players didn't expect their PCs getting their hands cut off when they agreed with the DM to use the optional disarming rule.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow lucky feat and Wiz. divination portent feature for downtime activity rolls?

Does that really make much difference for downtime activity that requires rolls? A lot of downtime activity takes longer than several days after all. MNblockhead I'm curious what kind of activity your players are doing that requires rolls and you consider problematic if they allowed to apply...

    D&D 5E (2014) Question on Ranger's and traps

Doesn't "disarm" mean "making it not function anymore without triggering it"? Poking a trap with a stick is just triggering it and not disarming, no? At least if someone told me he's going to disarm a bomb I wouldn't expect him to hit it from safe distance until it explodes.

D&D 5E (2014) I need some help with a few basic rules clarifications

Per turn, not per round. That's correct. I neglected to mention that in my post.

D&D 5E (2014) Do you allow lucky feat and Wiz. divination portent feature for downtime activity rolls?

Since the duration of a rest is always listed as "at least x hours", I'd say a whole downtime episode is a single long rest, so you won't recover any abilities until you resume adventuring.

Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?

My approach is: 1. I allow everything that's in the PHB except any "variant rules". 2. If the player does not own a PHB, he can still join, but is limited to the options in the basic rules. 3. I allow everything that's in supplement that belongs to the current adventure path (e.g. in my...

    D&D 5E (2014) Question on Ranger's and traps

Pretty sure "having locks" and "requiring a key" is not the only reason why Thieves' Tools are required to disarm traps as those tools also include "a small mirror mounted on a metal handle, a set of narrow-bladed scissors, and a pair of pliers." The DM determines what ability, skill and tool...

    Monsters with regional effects

Dragons sharing a lair? Preposterous! (By RAW I'd say yes. Nothing says that regional effects don't stack.)

D&D 5E (2014) I need some help with a few basic rules clarifications

Yes, an unarmed strike does not count as finesse weapon. The attack must use a finesse or ranged weapon. It is not required to use your DEX modifier. Unarmed Strike appears under simple melee weapons, but it does not have the light property that is required for Two-Weapon Fighting. Three...

    D&D 5E (2014) Aarakroca Carrying Capacity

There's no other way to move an ally during combat, though. So either that, shove, or it's impossible. In fact I'd say the only difference between willing and unwilling target here is that the willing target can opt to auto-fail it's athletics/acrobatics check so that the grapple always...

    Ideas for Improving Inspiration

For me it's important to make suffering disadvantage (not necessarily in form of a roll, but let's call it... a "suboptimal move") a requirement. You're right that it's a disincentive to trying to earn it - but that's what I want to accomplish in the first place. If all my players are min-maxers...

    Ideas for Improving Inspiration

I added the following lately: When a player receives inspiration but already has it, he can himself reward inspiration to another PC for good role-playing. Players having to give their inspiration to someone reminds them to use it occassionally. As for the other issue, I just ask my players to...

D&D 5E (2014) Would Rogues be broken if Sneak Attack were always on?

I honestly don't think it's that hard to tell when Sneak Attack applies. Standing next to an enemy? --> pretty easy to tell, even when doing "Theatre of the Mind" Using a dex-based weapon? --> pretty much always true, at least my players usually don't use a large number of different weapons...

Detect/Discern Lie, Ring of Truth, and similar abilities

Lie includes the intend to deceive. Saying something that's not true but you believe it is true is not a lie. I do the same in 5e when it comes to Persuasion vs. Deception. If you think you're telling the truth, Persuasion applies. If you intentionally tell a lie to deceive, Deception applies...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-trivial climbing during combat

For me it's not a question of requiring an action. Using your movement to climb results in me asking for a roll, but that doesn't mean it consumes an action. A roll doesn't need to be tied to an action, it's just tied to an uncertain result. If the player succeeded and reaches the top he could...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-trivial climbing during combat

Good point! Since I allow to use dash without extra roll, then failure also mean no extra roll when dashing. I usually do lower than 5 = fall, 5-9 = can't move and 10 = succeed (that's the handling that's suggested in Lost Mine of Phandelver for a particular situation). It's hard to think of a...

    D&D 5E (2014) Non-trivial climbing during combat

Let's say it was established that climbing something requires a successful DC 10 Athletics check and the PC failed that check during combat. Would you allow the PC to roll again on the same turn when he uses the Dash action to retry?
