This is why I cited her posts/play style like 300+ or more pages ago trying to understand if what you and Robert do is aligned with that sort of highly principled and deliberate methodology of prep and running. Her posts are among some of the most referenced in the newer ranks of OSR players...

The author lays out why she chose “nonsense” words like Blorb/gloracle and it’s because she wanted to avoid the pre-existing context and subjective understandings around most TTRPG terminology. It was intentional to ensure precision in discussion and writing. You’ve seen going on 7k posts...

I appreciate the lengthy response & have a pretty solid grasp of how I think you handle stuff now; but I did want to just slide in and ask: Midkemia? Wow, talk about flashing back to my childhood books there! Is that a setting you built based off the Riftwar works?

very cool! Thanks for sharing, yeah I can see how that all comes together to give this feeling of a “living world” around them. Love having the players roll on the tables/declaim a degree of decision making there - I do that a lot with my Stonetop game as well. Your emphasis on factions /...

Literally every argument / discussion ive seen about agency outside of this board (non-exhaustive, sample size of 1) is in the context of “railroad vs non-railroad / how much can the players drive the direction of the game.”

When you say "not deciding outcomes on the fly" here, and the rest of this, does that mean that when you need to rule/decide on something (are there bandits here? what has happened to the town since the adventurers last came through? what dangers threaten the realm? etc) you're referring to hard...

I hate to re-litigate the definition, but generally agency is meant to mean "ability to move towards a goal/specific result." This sort of deep-held control seems to less be about agency and more about, well, control or OC-style character-conception. It doesnt really tell us anything about said...

Cool, yeah. I’m not aware of many games that are designed with conflict mechanics and also don’t do something vaguely similar, because “losing control of yourself” is such a core trope of like, all narratives (and life?). If somebody was so absolutist about like, consent based effects to that...

I mean, not to slide in here and undercut it a bit but for the groups I'm running it pretty much happened "overnight." I think that the character-drama focused play culture that permeates younger generation 5e right now actually makes for a lot of folks really ready to do this level of...

w Hi, I'm not really tracking the stuff super close: but I do know that they edited the phrasing on their Sway replacement because it was pointed out on Reddit that as written it would trigger basically any time you asked anybody to do anything. I've seen other people say they've cleaned up a...

Two examples of play: Running the excellent dungeon crawl "Winter's Daughter" for a group. I am running entirely per map&key notes, acting as an impartial referee per the procedures of OSE. The dungeon is full of context clues, Landmark/Hidden/Secret design philosophy environments ready for the...

That's, like, your opinion man. I seem to get incredibly rich, deep (to the point of serious emotional resonance) roleplaying out of games that are designed with binding social mechanics that far exceed anything I was able to experience in 5e Adventure Path or OSR sandbox play.

It feels like goalpost shifting most of the time. @hawkeyefan or myself or somebody else will make a set of statements operating under a constrained, workable for internet discussion set of either caveats or assumptions, and then Robert will go "well we can't really discuss that, because we need...

I feel the need to point out that you often take this “oh it’s too complex / more complex than your statement” tack - which is really frustrating. If everything is so complex we must write essays with every permutation considered, we can never discuss things. To say that “well we can’t know how...

Dungeon World Gets New Owners, Second Edition Planned

Every single new D&D player I’ve run games for in the last two years has been a Crit Role fan. Literally every one. DW has always been kinda sold as “the D&D you thought you were going to play until you saw the combat rules” and this is recasting that in the broad brush younger generation...

To be fair, the "convince the Baron to help you" or whatever it is in the 4e DMG is probably the weakest example SC WOTC produced by far, and most counter productive. However, I just cannot comprehend (given an open-skill SC using the Skills Compendium or DMG..2? rules) how "player makes a...
