D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

What the Bastion system reminds me of is the video game State of Decay 2. There are certain bases you can take over on the map for your community - some are small, some medium or large. Inside each base, let's say Rusty Rosey's, a rundown gas station/biker kitchen, there are small slots and...

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

I'm reminded of a 3.x character I made just because. A dwarf sorceror. Yes, he had an 18 Con, and max CHA (16?) He was a sorceror but he thought he served the great Rat spirit and he was a Rat shaman (stolen from Shadowrun). They find some treasure, including a 500gp tapestry. Ho hum for...

Worlds of Design: Hit Fast, Strike Hard

Totally agree with the sentiment about the Golf Bag of Doom, with the weapons. That's why I like that, in 7th Sea second edition, its your weapon skill that determines damage, not the weapon. A maxed out weapon dagger skill means you do more damage than a greataxe does.

Worlds of Design: Hit Fast, Strike Hard

Now, there are also some systems like 1e Legend of the Five Rings where hitting is semi-easy if you're skilled enough. Semi-easy, until you realize there's also a gambling mechanic - you can voluntarily raise your target number to do extra effects, like extra dice in damage. Some fighting...

D&D 5E (2024) Should 2014 Half Elves and Half Orcs be added to the 2025 SRD?

My dude. I already - to correctly use the word 'literally' - posted the LITERAL text from the 2024 PHB page 5. The first sentence LITERALLY says "This is the 2024 version of the fifth edition Player's Handbook." That is - again, to use your term, - literally saying it is Fifth edition, a new...

D&D 5E (2024) Should 2014 Half Elves and Half Orcs be added to the 2025 SRD?

I feel this is hair-splitting - can't give permission versus informing it's possible. A DM always decides everything. That's self-evident. In the case of half-elves, but more specifically half-orcs, there was a large assumption about their birth status - I'm pretty sure if you go back, even...

Worlds of Design: Hit Fast, Strike Hard

Great article, as usual. I think this is a good design question, along the lines for sports of "Offense sells tickets; defense wins championships." I do think that, often, it seems people don't think about the mechanical advantages that sheer numbers bring. We laugh in Return of the Jedi...

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

I felt like it was also geared towards players who want to create stories, but also geared towards characters who want to have a research library and a poison garden to provide resources for their PCs, so it's never butting heads with the DM about 'Well, where are you going to get astral...

D&D 5E (2024) Dungeon Master's Guide Bastion System Lets You Build A Stronghold

Wow, that really sucks about your Dark Sun game. What it reminded me of was a short story in Dragon called Water and Ashes, where one of Tyr's most ruthless templars, known as the Sleepless One because of his relentless nature, put on a magical helm for power. Surprise - Helm of Alignment...

Mongoose acquires Twilight 2000 and 2300 AD

Don't forget - it's because of the magic of John Milius. Screenwriter of Apocalypse Now, director of Conan. ... the human being John Goodman's character in the Big Lebowski is based on (true story)

Mongoose acquires Twilight 2000 and 2300 AD

The first campaign I remember, back when the original released, involved players being members of the US 3rd Army, I believe, and the debate about what to do: Do they stay and be warlords in Europe, or do they try to double time it through wilderness full of sickness and banditry and try to get...

Mongoose acquires Twilight 2000 and 2300 AD

Personally, I love TW2000. I love Mongoose Traveller. Could I handle a Twilight 2000 using Traveller's engine? Absolutely. I'm sure the newer version is fine but it didn't grab me system wise. Useless fact: The original Twilight 2000 was insanely simulationist. I mean, you even roll your...

D&D General Shadow vs belt of giant strength

I can also see this approach in a similiar way to Tony Stark's arc reactor keeping him alive by repulsing the shrapnel from reaching his chest. Now, the question becomes how to balance it because, as was said, when's the last time any PCs got butt nekkid and took off any gear?

D&D General Shadow vs belt of giant strength

On a side note, I'd LOVE to play in a campaign that treated hit points the same way. That's one thing I love with 1e Legend of the Five Rings. Combat is deadly, as it should be. Because dice explode (roll and add), the first fatality I had in a campaign was a hero taking a goblin stick to the...

D&D General Shadow vs belt of giant strength

I like this ruling. It doesn't give extra benefits to the belt, and makes strength damage still a threat. In a way, I feel it also mirrors how D&D works where you can take 50 damage and still be completely functional at 1 HP, but once that last HP goes away.... splat.

What would be in your perfect Halloween setting?

A couple other Halloween experiences I've had playing, besides the Bloody Barber who was making human parts into creepy scarecrows and jack o lanterns... 1) Using Dread, we played as kids who were invited to a rich kid's halloween party. The kid's dad owned the steel mill and we were all kids...

I got this confused with Army of Thieves, the prequel to Army of the Dead, and was disappointed by the shocking lack of zombies.

The Legend of Vox Machina Free on YouTube for Limited Time

VM started as a one shot for, I believe, Liam O'brien's birthday. The reason there's so many half elves is they got to the table (this is based on a 2+ year D&D campaign actual play), and Liam was talking about his character. Laura Bailey also had decided seperately to be a sneaky half elf...
