    D&D 5E (2014) The Harmless Suplex?

Depending on how your DM views "Unarmed Attack" (i.e. does grappling count), a 3rd level open hand monk can grapple-flurry+trip.

D&D 5E (2014) Can my table focus on making things fun instead of optimizing?

So, I DM a lot and have run into this. It is a common thing for the characters to be optimized and for players to feel that need - after all, D&D on it's surface is a game of numbers, and lots of number-gifted people play it. 4e enhanced that a lot by making things very mechanical. I have one...

    D&D 5E (2014) Screenshot Hero Lab 5e (Non-Official, Homebrew)

Hey, question, are there licensing issues with you distributing the code with basic set content? Or even the framework with dummy content entirely?

    D&D 5E (2014) Monks making HALO jumps

that is incredibly evocative. When you said it, I filled the entire scene out in my head - monks dropping off of dragons, groundpounder fighter view complete with shakeycam, tarrasque ripping apart castle walls and tossing huge chunks to crush platoons. All eerily silent except for Requiem, all...

    D&D 5E (2014) Monks making HALO jumps

Monks have been like this for a long time. Back in Arcana Evolved, the Oathsworn had a crapton of immunities and made excellent message carriers. Literally run at 60mph without sleep forever. I love this image of the monk - a SpecOp guy

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeonscape no more?

I don't have enough information to lay any blame here, and I don't think I want to. However, I gotta wonder why it is so darned difficult for Wizards and it's partners to get out some solid digital tools. The community has done lots and lots of good tools, and sadly, have actually been hampered...

    D&D 5E (2014) Getting advantage, forcing disadvantage

Fighter's menacing attack with a save makes them Frightened, which gives them disadvantage (frightened is called out) bestow curse can directly give disadvantage against you. blur gives disadvantage on attack rolls against you chill touch can grant disadvantage to attack rolls against undead...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

I would not be surprised if some are better than others on this account. Hold person, if fighting humanoids, is pretty worth it on the higher level slots, as the effect is rather complete and debilitating in and of itself. Fireball? Maybe not. It's not like 14d6 is necessarily going to kick you...

I had entirely missed that you can ID items with a short rest. screw them, ID your own stuff!

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

Alright, first level wizard - what does your spellbook contain? I am guessing Identify, Detect Magic, and Find Familiar, because they are all rituals and don't actually have to be memorized. Sleep is almost a given but perhaps people like something else. I personally like fog cloud and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

This is kind of the point in the wizard doing the research. He's not going to be perfect, but +1-3 most of the time is a good edge to pull. "The evil archmage doesn't really like using minions. the townsfolk have always seen him alone" - gear up your single target, action denying, con-targetting...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

Me? I'd probably give it to everyone, and I probably wouldn't even hide it. If someone asked, I'd probably tell them. Then again, I've come off of 13th Age recently where the whole DM secrecy thing is actively discouraged. and why? Because a large portion of the wizard's abilities are based on...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

well, certainly. you can play however you'd like! I don't mean to imply that you can't at all. In my view, some of these things should be fairly tried and true. Goblins are easily manipulated, ogres are tough and dumb, undead don't generally have minds affected by illusions, red dragons kinda...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

I certainly don't have a problem with it, at least on a character who is arguably supposed to be smarter than me. Right tool for the right job, simple as that. The whole phrase batman wizard revolves around the wizard always having the right tool on his belt. It certainly doesn't have to be...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

Lemme guess, fighting things with a reasonable dex? Goblins or something? Your basic goblin has a 15AC and a 14 Dex, making hits against Dex or AC not that much fun (assuming a 17 int, you are looking at a 55% to hit AC, and the goblin has to make an 11+ on his save, which is 50%). Burning hands...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

I lobby for this to be a use of monster knowledge checks, and have been working on a spreadsheet for "best spells if you don't know what you are facing". Basically "this targets X, because X tends to be low" or "take int based anything, plus things to cover undead and other things that tend to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

That's good to see. I think I would pick a little differently at first level, and maybe some of the other ones, but not much. My cantrip loadout would be very close - I might swap light for something else, and mage hand vs unseen servant as a ritual is kind of a tough choice for me. I to tend...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

thanks for this. This kind of is the gist I'm getting from it. It also means that the DM probably needs to make sure that the wizard has the information he needs to pick spells well. Memorizing hold person when the big bads are mostly monsters is going to make him feel like he wasted his time.

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

While I don't disagree with the concept, it is somewhat important for every class to have their moment in the sun in all the aspects of the game. This is why we have clerics and fighters the way they are now - specifically because we didn't like heal bots and fighters getting outshined by...

    D&D 5E (2014) Sell me on Wizards

Agreed. However, it does point out the value of dwarven wizards. They can get medium armor proficiency out of the gate. Pretty big leg up to not have to cast mage armor. It also means you should almost definitely take fire bolt right off, or maybe ray of frost. Poison Spray is pretty strong...
