D&D 5E (2014) Spells cast at higher level spell slots. Worth it?

Read all of this to one extent or another, and only have a couple things to add The DMG has a nice table for determining new spells. That actually seems like it would be a useful baseline. Only part it is missing is "no save" spells like magic missile, which I think can easily be handled by...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Traps Revisited

or something like from Tomb of Horrors where there are fake pit traps next to pit traps to discourage the "i jump over it" solution. yes, you see a pit trap, but without the investigation, you don't know that it is fake, and miss the one on the other side of it

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Traps Revisited

I don't disagree, so maybe the example was bad, but... I think the point is that it would prompt more investigation, and perhaps exploit some other knowledge skills. It doesn't even have to be super hard, but enough to get the idea that it's not going to be darts, and it's not some burrowing...

Unearthed Arcana Unearthed Arcana: Traps Revisited

This is incredibly insightful, and would be useful in any DMG. The fact that perception should not tell you it's a trap. Perception tells you "it's a hole in the ground" or "it's a hole with a canvas covering it" or "there is a thing metal wire running across the hall" or "there are holes in the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Updating Improved Familiar to 5e?

Yea, I guess I don't have much of a problem with the flying. Brooms of flying are uncommon and all. To each his own on that I think. This touches on a tangential debate about power levels in campaigns and what is real power that I'm going to try and avoid :)

    D&D 5E (2014) Updating Improved Familiar to 5e?

Nod, mostly spitballing ideas. As for a mount, the idea was that it is a utility, and not a new form of attack. Make it a magic saddle if you like :) I always liked the idea of the 4e wizard being able to ride his ooze mount ;) I think the important part really is that, instead of making...

    D&D 5E (2014) Updating Improved Familiar to 5e?

Thinking about this more, it might be better to determine exactly what is being looked for out of an upgraded familiar. My feeling is that toughness is part of that, or at least risk of dying is mitigated somewhat. How about a simple mechanical increase of defenses on an existing familiar...

    D&D 5E (2014) Updating Improved Familiar to 5e?

I personally like the spell slot increase idea. But if I were to do a feat, I would have it allow a higher CR level of miscellaneous creature from the MM. this leaves the pact options in the bulk of the monster manual. An ape feels about right, or a constrictor snake. Even a dire wolf or a...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Lore Wizard

Scorching ray does more because it does no damage on a miss. Melf's does half of the first round damage. According to the DMG spell creation rules, those are actually equal. Have a 50% save in there and they are within a point. Thunderwave does all of one point less on average and as a push...

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Lore Wizard

I also think that's pretty reasonable. edit: however, I think per creature struck. So if you are making INT fireballs, everyone gets INT once.

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Lore Wizard

I think that is a fair change. It is in line with the parts where it is clear certain spells were not considered (AOE + 2d10, etc)

D&D 5E (2014) In Defense of the Lore Wizard

My own comments Lore Master - it's fine. I think it makes sense. Spell Secrets - I'd drop out force and radiant, more for RP reasons than OP reasons. I think explicitly linking it to Lore Master would be smart. "As a bonus action, you can do an X roll to determine resistances and...

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

i think that's quite creative, and I would allow it. I would require the roll for each lock.

    D&D 5E (2014) Treantmonk's Guide to Wizards 5e

A bit niche, but I can see using Arcane Gate to shift around dangerous terrain (say, lava, or a part of a river). Bonus action to turn the flood gate (heh) on and off. I could also see using it at the edge of dangerous terrain, like a cliff, escaping through, then turning the active side to...

    D&D 5E (2014) Evaluating the warlord-y Fighter

Or perhaps make them more like the Bardic Inspiration dice, and at later levels they refresh more frequently. but, to your point about 4e warlords, I played one. He was a monster Bravura type. At a certain point (around level 5-7) we started noticing serious combat slowdowns. I started timing...

What app do you use to read your PDFs on tablets?

PDF expert on iOS. Fastest one out there. Not free. I use it on my iPad 2 for the love of $diety. I've tried most of the ones in the list here. This beats all of them save in a few cases Adobe. Adobe handles some very advanced ones that no one else will reasonably.

    D&D 5E (2014) Grappling - What am I missing?

You don't even NEED the cutting words. I have a level 3 valor bard with a 14 strength. He pulls a +6 on grapples. Which actually beats an ogre. Enhanced ability makes it plenty strong with expertise. The biggest issue is the limit on size you can grapple :)

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

No offense taken. My experience with X-Com is surprisingly limited. I just remember playing it and thinking "this would be easy in 4e". If it doesn't match your goals, then it's not going to work :)

    X-Com: the Redshirtening

I have thought repeatedly that 4e is actually X-com. It has a lot of the right mechanics, including e same movement, readying actions, range, cover, discrete action types, defined player character roles, etc. on could even use something like gamma world, which simplifies things a bit and...
