    D&D 5E (2014) Agility-based katana wielder: is it possible?

This is and excellent suggestion. It allows for the fast attacking business one sometimes sees with samurai archetypes, it allows for high levels of movement, it even allows for a samurai vs ninja vibe (way of the shadow).

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

To turn this thread a bit more positive, let's discuss this part. The wizard has high versatility. I'm willing to accept that, but what do you define as versatility? Having the right tool for the job, perhaps? What does your wizard player, other members of the party, and you do to make sure...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drawmij's Instant Summons: Am I Missing Something?

Fair enough, although I suspect the intention there is to make it so you can't have 5 castings on the same gem without crushing it.

    D&D 5E (2014) Drawmij's Instant Summons: Am I Missing Something?

Compare to Simulacrum clearly, there is language to say that the spell makes it go away. I suspect the intention was to make it a 1000gp insta-summon. However, it is so niche it makes me really think it might be fine. They already constrain it by weight, it's a rare slot, etc etc etc.

    D&D 5E (2014) Drawmij's Instant Summons: Am I Missing Something?

I don't disagree, particularly on the crushing part. However! Unless 1k gems are quite common, or magic items are very hard to come by, I'm going with this cheese, because this is some Limburger if not! Putting it in the LSC is good insurance against it getting purloined by someone. You could...

    D&D 5E (2014) Drawmij's Instant Summons: Am I Missing Something?

No GP limit on mending anymore. there is precedent for casting multiple mends to fix items now. might take you a while, but I think you can get it back!

    D&D 5E (2014) Drawmij's Instant Summons: Am I Missing Something?

You could have your familiar do the touching. "I was never even close to it!" note, it does not say the sapphire is destroyed as most spell components are. So.. could you reuse a sapphire after you Mended it? edit: also, might be handy with Leomund's secret chest. A chest of 1000gp gems is...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

That and going from cr1/8 kobolds with 5 hit points to cr2 with 50 hit points is about 7 levels of encounter jump and you can be dropping another 6 dice of sleeping power into it. The big neutralizer of sleep is that it doesn't "damage" in parallel. Fireballs do damage to everyone, sleep you...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

While i don't disagree they have more versatility than sorcerer and warlocks theoretically, they are practically limited to a couple of choices early in the levels. Clerics and druids, being divine casters, have A LOT of versatility at level 1-4 - they have access to the full list of spells...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

while i might disagree with KarinsDad about a lot of this thread, I don't disagree here. It's not archer, and specifically for the reasons he stated. They get kinda meh damage due to the lack of a stat mod. Not to mention their range is not that good. I have a 16 dex gnome wizard - his light...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

yea, I agree, probably too powerful to get advantage as a bonus action. However, canceling disadvantage by itself might be ok. There is definitely some design space here. It seems like a spell designed more for people who have extra actions or have more to-hit stuff than a wizard - here's...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

agreed. I don't know that I would be horribly opposed to it being a bonus action cast and it affecting your next to hit roll. I've not done a lot of thinking about that, but you can already get advantage with a familiar pretty easily, and it sucks up a bonus action that could be used for a...

um.. wizards as a class do not get faerie fire by the book.

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

While I agree that concentration is a strong limiter, I think you are overstating it. It's not a solo game. and anything? it's almost like there is not a reaction spell and defensive no-concentration spells. some casters nova. not every caster has good nova potential here. 3.5e ogre - 2d8+7...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rating the 1st level Wizard Spells

As a DM and the more generic definition of pack tactics, I do it pretty regularly. I also am that DM who thinks that combined arms (aka I used ranged and melee guys, always) is the way to go. In 13th age, I LOVED using ranged guys who got bonuses when they had a friend within 5', and melee guys...

    D&D 5E (2014) Rating the 1st level Wizard Spells

you get to know if you are hit :) Shield is pretty well going to dominate low level slots. That and mirror image. Spells like that make the lack of concentration flexibility a bit less painful. As a DM, I just started rolling in the open. It was easier on my players, it was easier on me. They...

D&D 5E (2014) Low Level Wizards Really Do Suck in 5E

ray of frost did 1d6+ int + slow in 4e, now it does 1d8 + slow. The difference is small, and 1d8 is comparable to base weapon damage. 1d6+int was actually less than many classes could do. it did 2d6+int at level 21, approximately 2/3 through the levels. Now it does 3d8 at level 11, and 4d8 at...
