D&D General Does D&D (and RPGs in general) Need Edition Resets?

The most unquestionably popular D&D thing basically ever, Crticical Role, runs closer to the 4E god layout than AD&D. also if we want to anecdote things, when I tried to get a friend into D&D and told of the 5E races, she immediately went for Tabaxi. This is because khajiit, of course...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Dr. Dhrolin's Dictionary of Dinosaurs

Like every single TV show has them just. Jumping out of the water. Its a bit of a meme. So people went silly with the meme. One of the closest relatives of pteranadon. Also notably one of the very few pterosaurs who just, don't have hands. Just, completely lost all of the hand except for the...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Dr. Dhrolin's Dictionary of Dinosaurs

In a blog post these were described as being the equivilent of sticking a howitzer on a golf cart and calling it a tank. Lovely we get two of them showing up as they're incredibly obscure critters who people are most likely not to know about Despite us thinking of the Mesozoic as the age of the...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

I've found the best one in terms of actual edition history is 1d4chan of all things which, raises a lot of questions about why the fricking 4chan derived thing is the best for actual looking at the histoy of things and how they've changed through editions

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Dr. Dhrolin's Dictionary of Dinosaurs

Its what I do. Dinosaurs are my jam Ubirajara is about as much of a mess as Tetrapodophis is. By which I mean the exact same person was involved in both and, honestly, Tetrapodophis should probably be withdrawn for much the same reasons (except its fossil is in private hands so not as easy to...

D&D General Does D&D (and RPGs in general) Need Edition Resets?

Just going back to this, they'd absolutely be re-invented by the game over time. Not even that the seeds for all three mentioned races were laid in the very next edition, they're just wide, popular archetypes Dragonborn are the playable dragon-people, which have existed since AD&D in the form...

    D&D 5E (2014) [Let's Read] Dr. Dhrolin's Dictionary of Dinosaurs

Dinosaurs.... My domain. Love this work, incidentally. Which never ends, incidentally. The artist for this book, Mark Witton, even had a lovely meme up about how things were. There's a reason We don't talk about spino was an immediate hit in the paleo-meme sphere and that is this lovely...

WotC [Updated!] Hasbro Laying Off 1,100 Employees

Surprise he didn't get booted eallier, frankly. Given everything else that came out earlier and they stuck their neck out for him back then, surprised he didn't get booted then Sad for the rest of people being fired and I'm hoping this burns Hasbro and WotC bad, but I will lose no sleep over...

D&D General Tech in DnD; What should be included and how much is too much? (+)

Guns have existed since the 13th century, D&D's tech level is well in the space of guns given a lot of the other things in-game Mind when I say 'gun' I am talking older stuff like the arquebus

D&D General Tech in DnD; What should be included and how much is too much? (+)

I'm surprised how many folks say guns take them right out of it. Mind, I am unabashed about my hefty influence from WoW So uh, I guess whatever tech level WoW is, the vaguely Renaissance that also allows for airships, zeppelins, trains and even the occaisonal actual plane or gyrocopter, but...

D&D 5E (2024) The Cleric should be retired

I'm not sure I'd call the Green DPS, who harvests the pain and suffering of my group to nourish the Blood Lily, to be the dedicated healer... The group gets healed so my big DPS ability does More Damage

    D&D 5E (2024) Playtest 8 Druid discussion

The big showy moment for the druid in the D&D movie was "Turn into an owlbear", and outside of D&D the wider thing of druids is "They turn into animals" thanks to Diablo and Warcraft, so the shapeshifting is absolutely something folks associate with it more than the nature mage side

D&D General Companion Thread for D&D Survivor: Ferrous Dragons

Back in the day I know I found the thread where the Ferrous were updated to 3E, plus the beginnings of the counterparts (Stone dragons IIRC). Its somewhere in all of those updates to 3E

D&D General Tell Us About Your Gnolls! [+]

Yup. Early hyenas were also weird, with stuff like Chasmaporthes, the only hyena that made it over to North America, being a sprinter. There were a lot of generalist hyenas, the bone-crushers were just a specialised family. But in the end, all the dog-like hyena generalists died out but one...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Just didging one up from a while ago (look I was out and had to lug a 2 ft tall toy home on a train I've had a weird one today) I wouldn't say its watered down, but its super changed. They went in on the "weekend from hell" feel of the original box set which, if you were someone who preferred...

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

Oh absolutely, Warcraft's got problems. There's a reason Exploring Kalimdor is as uh... Regarded as it is But, it shoved "Yeah orcs are just people" so hard into the cultural zeitgeist that it cannot be removed

D&D 5E (2014) D&D's Inclusivity Language Alterations In Core Rules

In this day and age, more people care about Warcraft and its various parts than anything, except Tolkein, from the original Appendix N. D&D swiped heaps of its creatures from pop culture, why wouldn't it pay attention to how pop culture handles orcs and goblins? Warcraft affected how pop culture...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for in combat healing and yoyo at 0 HP

Not all the enemies, but stuff like stunning does similar (Remove a single target) but has bonuses, like the bonus damage. So compared to that, heals aren't doing the best. 1.5 times a single target DPR seems fair. Enough 'oomph' to a heal that it feels worthwhile to use

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for in combat healing and yoyo at 0 HP

Nope. That damage you healed is gone again. A goblin sneezed and that took out the HP you healed, sorry. They're back to where they were and all the damage came through, your healing was pointless. On a strict timeline of damage for time, 5E massively values damage over healing. We're how many...

D&D 5E (2014) House rule for in combat healing and yoyo at 0 HP

Enough to make the loss of a round of attacks be worthwhile, so probably at least the full amount of damage you could expect to get in at least a single round, if only a single round and a half as a bare minimum. As for resource cost? Basically the same as what it is at present. Failling that...
