D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

I put together a few custom background ideas. These are built mostly on a theme of "apprentice". We don't have info on if or how custom backgrounds might be put together, but the basics seem pretty easy. I don't see any reason the DMG wouldn't allow it. Just need to focus on the...

D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

That's kind of what I was thinking of. The "Kraft Lawrence of Spice and Wolf" kind of archetype. But, while I considered that, Navigator's Tools don't really apply (aside from whatever their Utilize functionality may be). There's lots of travel town to town, but those are fixed routes. You know...

D&D 5E (2024) Learning to Love the Background System

Summary of Backgrounds: Summary of my impression of them, absent any attempt at optimization or evaluation of the origin feats: Acolyte - Everything makes sense. Wouldn't change it. Artisan - All but skills make sense. Not that many other skills would make sense, though, so whatever...

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

Barbarian uses Primal Knowledge to use Strength for stealth check to Hide. Barbarian rips tree out of the ground to carry with him so he'll always have cover. Guards carefully edge around the tree in the middle of the castle hallway. "Nope, didn't see anything."

    D&D 5E (2024) I just got a 2024 PHB From Gen Con. AMA!

Can you check the write-up for barbarian's Brutal Strike? I've heard a couple different explanations of what it finally ended up as in the PHB, and would like to be sure.

Little bit of craziness... Sorcerer 10 + Wizard 9 + Warlock 1 9th level Conjure Minor Elementals lasting 20 minutes (Extended) 258 casual damage if you only need cantrip-level attacks. 300-550 damage using upcast Scorching Ray (between 4th and 8th level slot) if you need dragon-killing...

A slight diversion examining the Invisible condition. Types of Invisible: Unseen. Magical invisibility from spells or other features can make it so that you can't be seen with normal vision. Can be lost if you make an attack roll. Can be lost if you cast a spell. NB: Can be bypassed with...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

@OB1 I would consider that mostly reasonable, except the auto-find in bright light. Simple example: A monster is in the center of a field, and you're hidden behind a rock. You want to make it to a nearby tree. If the monster if facing away, this should be doable, even in bright light. If the...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

My argument is that the Stealth check to Hide satisfies the incidental noise requirement for remaining hidden, but not the voluntary actions of the player/character. Incidental noise is the footsteps of you walking, the clanking of your armor, the jostling of your backpack, your breathing, etc...

So for this example, I'd approach it from the opposite direction. Your rogue is trying to get to the Altar of Doom, and a couple turns in the head priest realizes that there are only three people fighting, when there are supposed to be four. "Where's the fourth interloper? Everyone! Some...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

I would say that you are not merely "somehow seen", but that you have been "found" if you stand out in the middle of an empty field like that. You are dressed and armed as a combatant, and moving into a combat zone. The other side doesn't know you (assuming you hid before they initially saw...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

If I were to correlate movement with noise, I'd say: If you Dash, you always make enough noise to lose the Invisible condition by the end of your turn, regardless of concealment. If you walk, you make enough noise to be noticed, and will lose the Invisible condition if you do not end your turn...

Taking a little side trip... Star Wars: Millennium Falcon on the Death Star Han, Luke, and the rest used Hide after the Falcon was captured by the Death Star. Using smuggling compartments likely gave them advantage, since those are designed to hide things. The stormtroopers that boarded to...

    D&D 5E (2024) New stealth rules.

To address this: The Invisible condition does not concern itself with noise at all. I think this makes sense. The Invisibility spell, granting magical invisibility (ie: One Ring-style invisibility), gives you the Invisible condition without any other strings attached. You can make as much noise...

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

No, it shows that stealth is actually a rather complicated subject, and some people aren't satisfied with a simple solution when a more complicated solution can be had.

Things I would add to the rules to clarify what I believe is either the intent, or the expectation of how things work: 1) Add an "Unseeable" clause to Invisible: Unseeable: If you gain the Invisible condition via a magic action, or via a feature which grants "magical" invisibility, you cannot...

So, something in another thread made me realize something. First, here's the definitions for Hidden and Invisible from the Expert Classes playtest: And here's the Invisible condition as presented in UA5: First, there's obvious similarities in the mechanics in the EC playtest, with the main...

D&D 5E (2024) Current Stealth Rule Actually Works As Is. If Moving Out of Cover After Hiding Makes Enemies Immediately "Finds You", Hide Would Be Totally UNUSABLE.

Yep, it was in the Expert Classes playtest (not sure which number it counts as), and then changed in UA5. In the EC playtest, the Hidden condition was basically identical to the current Invisible condition, except it also included the conditions for losing it that are now incorporated into the...

Going through @Xetheral 's questions 1. Maybe. If the Invisible condition was gained via the Invisibility spell, then no. (Not specifying this in the spell is an oversight, in my opinion.) If the Invisible condition was gained via Hiding, and "line of sight" means looking straight at the...
