D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

Perhaps so. For me I can't play that way and enjoy the game at all.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I agree the game has not been remotely hard since at least 2e unless the DM went out of their way to make it hard. I haven't played 5e but I've seen the rules and I've seen the discussions. 3e and 4e were not hard either.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

For my groups I seriously doubt this would be true. We played without any hit dice and just basic cleric healing. And I don't think they made 5e harder. 200% is patently ridiculous from a verisimilitude perspective. This is also why I rejected 4e. My point is that I don't like the whole 4e...

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

See. I consider my own campaign to be deep immersive living world. Mine though is a little bit more like our real world in that experts on history who've gotten history skills actually know something about history. Characters don't have their minds wiped before starting out in the world.

    D&D 5E (2024) DMG 5.5 - the return of bespoke magical items?

I think EzekielRaiden that a lot of people just liked the way fighters and wizards worked in AD&D. Some of you didn't and thrilled at adding all the extra stuff they've added in recent years. Some of us do not. When you look at old school games (not retroclones), you still mostly see this...

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

Well I just took it as a point about one particular aspect of the game. I'm not sure it had to be one way or the other. Well. Even in 1e, I never imagined biological determinism was the thing. Drizz't seemed to be accepted easily and he came along before that concept ended. I always thought...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

You could just have a stat called healing dice. The monsters and NPCs aren't changing levels like crazy. So just assign them a die or dice. All healing powers can be expressed as a factor times healing dice.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

Then I believe no one in your game is choosing any skill that involves the recalling of knowledge. Do rogues use their disarm device skill? Should the player just stand up and pick the door to your garage? Unless you are running the game in the real world and even then it wouldn't really be...

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I like Monte Cook but I don't like his Cypher System. I tried Numenera but it wasn't for me. I'm sad he doesn't produce more for D&D. Ptolus was magnificent. Now that is a city like I'd design.

D&D 5E (2024) The Problem with Healing Powercreep

I think either I communicated my approach wrong or you misunderstood. At 1st, 2nd, and 3rd level, a cure light wounds does 1d10 on a fighter and 1d6 on a wizard At 4th, 5th, and 6th level, a cure light wounds does 2d10 on a fighter and 2d6 on a wizard At 7th, 8th, 9th level, a cure light wounds...

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

So a person trained in history cannot query their memory and find out about the history of which they are a supposed expert? Or are you saying that no such skill exists in 5e? I am struggling to follow your point at times.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

Sounds like you play a lot of campaigns that don't start at 1st level. I almost never do. That is not a criticism. Just an observation.

D&D General Harshest House Rule (in use)?

I wouldn't rule out having some major NPC allies / enemies detailed out early in session 0. If a group enters the home town of the PC then I can't imagine I've told him every single person he knew. No but the DM might say "You know a blacksmith on 3rd ave." So if a person has a high skill in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk 2024: comparing Oerth and Earth

Not sure about the collectability of these things. I'm not sure the 1e DMG is really all that collectable. They are relatively cheap online. But I agree the map is really nice.

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

Maybe call it the campaign construction kit. Though that might be too limiting. I still have my wilderness survival guide book that I consider one of the best books of its time. I have "The Book of the Righteous". I actually have a lot of DMing books but it would be nice for WOTC to produce...

D&D 5E (2024) Experienced DMs, how useful is the 2024 DMG to you?

I find discussion with those who disagree far more interesting than just everyone high fiving each other all the time. So we agree on that 100%. I also agree 5e was likely a compromise edition with some rough edges filed off. I also agree my playstyle started in the 80's (probably the 70's...

    D&D General 50 years, 50 publications - results

Core concepts like AC or hit points sure. The initial play experience helped. It's one of many reasons why I don't think people as a rule should DM before they've played. Would I have given up in those days if 1e AD&D had been my first experience? No. Teenage kids have a lot of time on...

    D&D 5E (2024) Greyhawk 2024: comparing Oerth and Earth

Nicely done. I love maps. I'm almost tempted to get the DMG 2024 just for the Greyhawk map. Probably why it's there. When I do my maps in Worldographer, my high level map is 180 miles across a hex. My continental maps are 30 miles across a hex. My lower level maps are 6 miles across a hex...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why aren't you using 5e 2024?

I thought the hyperbole was fun and took it as humor.
