    Your table is YOUR table.

I think if people believed WOTC was doing it because the majority of people wanted it then they'd be more accepting. For example, if the local ice cream store added soft serve ice cream along withs scoop, the scoop lovers should realize that a lot of people like soft serve. Be thankful scoop...

Hot take: get rid of the "balanced party" paradigm

I don't know if a game style name exists for mine. It's what I have played my whole life. Player skill including preparation. This means poor play will get you killed. Actor viewpoint though not always actor voiced. Third person is fine in many cases. No dissociative mechanics. Zero to...

How many were abused due to their love of D&D, RPGs, and related items when they were young?

I wasn't abused. My parents did ask me once about issues concerning the Satanic panic and I calmly explained the root of it and how it was not an issue in my game. And while I don't consider D&D dangerous, I am a bit hesitant to totally take the side of the kid in this case. His parents do...

Do You Think Open Playtests Improve a Game's Development?

I don't think it is even intended to actually be much of a playtest. It's more of an early marketing strategy. They want to see what hits with players and what they hate. So it's mixed

D&D 5E (2014) Magic Resistance: What was Old is New

I agree that SR was a move in the wrong direction. I like MR. I'd probably just do it differently and make it more 1st edition like. I'd have a flat number that a wizard has to beat by rolling a d20 and adding his level. So an old fiend that had a 95% MR would have MR: 30. I'd roll that...

D&D General What is your most prized Dungeons and Dragons Product?

The PHB was 15 dollars in 1980. That price adjusted for inflation would be 57.46 dollars today. The 2024 D&D players handbook on amazon is 49.99 but it retails for 59.95. So pretty close in price anyway.

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I don't doubt there are people like you but are you really a majority of players? I would have thought 80% of players still play with a group of friends but I admit I pulled that number right out of my hat. I'm sure there are those that do both so I'm counting those I suppose. FLGS game...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

My general approach is...define as much as you can and when you can't you roll dice. In this case, I honestly think even if there were ten cities, I could manage 30 to 60 NPCs with brief backstories to scatter around those cities fairly easily. I'd give the player the list. That doesn't mean...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

This kind of makes me sad. Don't you at least develop friendships from gaming? I can see starting out when you just happen to not know anyone but after you play for a bit don't you develop some friendships and try to game with those people next time?

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well it might be possible most of the time but is rolling something akin to a Streetwise roll that terrible. The fact something works without any chance of failure doesn't feel right to me. Even if the DC is 5 and 99% of the time you get it, there is in fact at least some chance something...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I think some actions defined for any class are clear cut well defined activities. A fighter knows he can attack and do such and such damage. A wizard knows if he casts a fireball it will have a well defined effect. Other things though are not as reliable. Most skill checks are not as...

D&D General How Often Should a PC Die in D&D 5e?

I think a lot of the divide about gaming is how we experience the game. I've almost always had people in my games that I know. If I have a new player then he or she is the singular new player. Most of the time I have veterans. With this sort of play as your norm, I can see why we are like...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I suspect if I played in your game I would not experience those things. And I accept that if you played in mine you might not experience those things. There is something in how we perceive the world that affects how we judge these things and we both are wired very differently.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Well I can't speak for 5e as I have not played it. But I think my struggles with 4e can't be greater in 5e having looked at the rules. I play a survival and logistics sort of game. I as DM have to do a lot of encounter modification to make it challenging but I usually can. Is it beginner...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

First I'm Emerikol not Emirikol. Second, it's not so much the work required as the fundamental concept of the DM being the ultimate arbiter in his campaign. There are many reasons why this is necessary in my style of play. One fact may be the amount of work the DM does, I'd say that is one...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

No. You've both found the others preference at least tolerable and I hope at least somewhat fun. I mostly DM so it is easier to get a game in my style. I don't think though I would like a lot of styles played here so it wouldn't be fun for me so I wouldn't do it. I'm not desperate for a...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I prefer old school sandbox with a well developed world where the adventures are play skill based and resource management is important. This is the harder question. Why do I prefer vanilla bean ice cream more than chocolate fudge? Yes. No. They might shift if I'm playing a one off versus a...

D&D General Drow as in Cow or Drow as in Snow: Where did the Dark Elves Come From?

I think due to the black and white interiors I never paid much attention and didn't realize until later that they were black. Still long ago of course. I think darkness is ascribed to evil because more evil happens when it is dark. I think the tendency to have black hats be villains comes from...

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

I disagree even with that...they obviously aren't ascending as they were in 1978 but they are ascending relative to the 3e and 4e eras. Some new players are finding out that there is a way they like more when they play in an OSR game. It all goes back to preferences and people have different ones.

    D&D General Playstyle vs Mechanics

Absolutely. Sandbox enables the DM to handle the level of detail he wants for the campaign.
